Got a few questions for you fancy pretty 3rd gen guys. I am changing jobs and need to haul people with money around instead of hay trailers. Soooo, tomarrow I am going out to look at those fancy trucks that I have been dreaming of since they first came out!!!

1. Is H. O. the only way to go?

2. Do they offer auto trannys in the H. O. trucks?

3. Is the 3rd gen auto any good, because my '95 auto has nuts the size of a grasshopper

4. Is there anything in particular to get or not get as an accessory?

5. A 4 door 4x4 short bed would probably go over better than a 4x4 dually, but is there any serious downfalls with either one.

---thanks for the input and advice---

the HO is the only way to go and the 48re transmission is suppose to be much better than the 47re and that is the only auto that you can get in the HO. 4x4 SB is much better that the dually unless you are hauling a very heavy load. I went from a 95 dually to an 03 HO 2500 and love it except for the lack of an anti-sway bar. My 03 48re seems to pull my 12000 fifth wheel with no problem and I get about 11. 5 mpg (solo 19-19-5) only about 4k miles. Hope this helps and it's just my 2cents.

I think that a couple of your questions can only be answered by YOU.

One question that I can answer for you is the auto transmission one that you have and the answer is yes. It's called the 48re. It is a 4 speed auto that is basically a 47re on steroids. This transmission has replaced the 47Rre so it is now used behind both SO and HO engines. When you get a new truck if it is an "on the lot" truck try and get the 48re as there are probably still some 47's hanging around.

Also, if you plan on ordering one do it soon because if you wait too long you could get stuck with an EGR engine.

One last thing, my 03 High Output/48re has it's nuts screwed on pretty tight. :D

WOW!!!

You guys who are privlidged enough to own one of these '03s are some lucky son of a guns! I went and drove a 4 door 4x4 HO auto today. That truck was silent inside, and definately had some cahones!! I could not believe how responsive it was and the turning radius. I will definately look to make sure that the transmission is a 48re. Are they starting that EGR in '04 1/2 or in the begining of '04?

I had a few to many cold ones one night and was mouthing off to a guy that my '95 could woop with his holy and allmighty '03. Boy am I glad he thought I had more horses than I really did!!! Anyways, just need to convince the bank now of how badly I need one of these bad boys!!

For 1-3, see my sig.

4. Unless you have very long legs, you'll need either steps/bars/running boards or a ladder. (I've got the Mopar/Kodiak electric steps. )

5. Keep in mind the size: a 4x4 DRW is just under 7' high and is 8' wide. The "training wheels" make it extremely stable, but it's taken me a while to get used to parking it between the lines.

Either way, if you get one you may find yourself with a problem (shared by many of us) - hurting cheeks from all the grinning you'll be doing! :D :D :D
