I posted a topic a little over a week ago about my noisy 6 speed. I just got it back from the dealer today. The new transmission makes the same horrible noise as the old one. It is a REALLY loud grinding noise in neutral. This is a absolutely new transmission. The dealer told me that this is normal. This is the first cummins truck I have owned with a manual transmission. It makes the noise only in neutral at idel, any bit of throttle and it goes away. Could it be anything other then the transmission? Please help! I want to get this fixed before the 30 day warranty is over.

I have a 2001 2500 HO 6 speed with a banks power pack. It has 37000 miles. As far as I know everything else is stock. I just bought it 3 weeks ago and that is all the dealer told me that it has.

Well it's not normal. Have you tried another dealer? Did they look at the clutch when the transmission was out? Did you see the old transmission after they pulled it or did they just tell you they put a new one in? Does it do it weather the clutch is in or out?

Maybe something in the drive train or linkage is touching the body or frame somewhere underneath the truck and transmitting through the shifter or floor board.

I believe the motor mounts in these trucks are liquid filled. ford had a problem and some recalls with these type mounts in the early '90's. I wonder if one of your motor mounts failed and the engine noise is transmitting. Then when you give it some fuel the engine torques over away from whereever it's touching.

I'm just thinking out loud here, maybe some things to look at.

When I picked the truck today and noticed the noise I went right back in to the service manager. He showed me the old transmission and I also asked the tech about the clutch. The Mechanic said the clutch, and throwout bearing looked like new. and the transmission was definitely replaced. The noise only happens when the clutch pedal is up at idle. I think I hear it going into 3rd gear when I get on it.

Just lay your foot on the pedal to see if the noise goes away. If it does, the throw out bearing is bad. Take it back to the dealer and have the service manager come out to the truck and you can show him that the noise goes away after you put your foot on the pedal.

I agree with the guys above... If in fact they changed the transmission, I believe it to be a clutch problem ie, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing etc. Call Peter at South Bend Clutches, he is an expert in those areas and perhaps can narrow down the symptoms if it is clutch related!!

I have the six speed and don't hear anything coming from the drivetrain when the clutch is in or out. I agree with earlier posts, if the noise changes when pushing in the clutch then the throw-out bearing would be my first guess. Second guess would be the clutch itself.

I'm amazed that the dealer didn't replace the throw-out bearing when they had the transmission out of the truck. Personally, I would've paid for the bearing out of pocket just to get it replaced when the transmission was out if the dealer refused to do it.

Good luck getting this resolved!
