Hey folks,

My mom has a 2002 2500 CTD, ex cab, short bed, 2wd, auto, and my dad is wanting to put gauges in it as they do a lot of camper towing. I have heard not to drill and tap the manifold on the 24-valves as they are consiberably thinner than my 12er's manifold. Is this just a rumor or am I stuck putting it post-turbo?

If I have to put it post- I will, I jsut prefer the more accurate, instant readings of the manifold itself. If you have a 24 and have tapped the manifold please chime in here and let me know if there are any special precautions I need to know for this manifold or if you had any problems. Thanks ya'll.

I have no idea where you heard that. I daresay the great majority of 24V pyros are installed pre-turbo. Mine certainly is.

The manifold is as I recall about 3/16" thick where you tap it.

Just be careful, and there are several sets of instructions of "how to" check search.

Just to be on the safe side I took my turbo off to be sure that no metal shavings got in there while drilling and tapping the manifold. If you dont remove the turbo I would recommend using a small strong magnet to try to remove all shavings from inside the manifold. Just an extra safeguard.

Wwell I guess I am in the minority again. Had a pre turbo pyro and it worked just great until the manifold split right through the hole that was drilled. So it does weaken it. I was doing some heavy towing (trip to Alaska) at the time and had a boost leak which resulted in some very high egt's-- with the gauge, however, I tried to keep the temps below 1300. I was told by the tech that if I had continued I could have burned the valves. So now I am torn as to whether to reinstall the pyro or go post turbo.

The ATS manifold is NOT pretapped. There is a boss where a machine shop can drill accurately, but it is not pretapped.

However, the ATS is almost 2x the thickness of the OEM. There are a couple of threads on how to get the 3 pieces together. Takes patience, antiseize, flat surface, and care. NOT hard though.

I have an 01 and tapped it pre turbo. I made sure and grease up my bit with axle grease to catch all the shavings. After I tapped it I used a magnet on an antenna thing to stick down in the hole and get all of the shavings out of the manifold. It went really easy and I have yet to have any problems. I had a 94 that I put the thermocouple post turbo. Pre turbo is a lot more accurate and it keeps the guess work out when working at the upper end of the temperature spectrum when climbing a hill with a load.
