Flying J Isn't Always The Best Price

Is it possible...

My dad's 1993 Ford Diesel (pre-powerstroke non turbo) has given it up. It has lost compression. The truck has about 135,000 miles on it and is in really good shape cosmetically. Can anyone tell me about what it would be worth as is? He is not sure he wants to spend the money to fix it. In the alternative, can anyone tell me where to get an inexpensive drop in replacement engine? Any help you all can provide would be appreciated. The truck is located in southern Illinois, about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, MO.

I owned an 85 ford and lunched the motor at 111,000 . A new short block from international ran about 6000. 00 it was still cheaper than a new truck. I would say the truck isn't worth much, if it were mine I would look for a junkyard motor. Good luck

Get a used one from a junk yard , $2,500-3,500 , then sell the dead motor to a machine shop as core , a few hundred .
Or it would good to put a Cummins in it , same cost except some extra for adapters .

Give northwest ford a call. They are in franklin park, I think. All they do is trucks there. They do sell long blocks, and short blocks.

Have you done any troubleshooting as far as pinpointing the problem? Are all cylinders low or just a couple, etc? If it is as simple as a cam being out or a valve job you might get it going for a reasonable amount. You might be throwing away an engine that's better than what you'd get from a salvage yard. I had two 6. 9's... makes me appreciate my Cummins all the more!

I'd drop a gas motor in it , leave it titled as a diesel,, no emissions to worry about ,, much cheaper than replacing the diesel

Theres probably somebody here that would be willing to take it off his hands to put a Cummins in it. Heck, I would if I had the money to do it.

He would entertain offers. I can take some pics if someone is really interested. The body is in great shape. The front tires have only about 2500 miles on them, the rears maybe 10,000. It is an F-350 dually with 137,000 miles on the truck. It is a crew cab auto trans. It has a 100 gallon fuel tank in the bed, and a Lund fiberglass cab extender. It has a lund sun visor and full aluminum running boards wheel to wheel. It also has very nice chrome grill guard. It is an XLT with pw, pl, cruise, tilt and a/c. Let me know if someone is interested or knows someone who is.

I don't mean to be disrespectful or a smart a__, but maybe it time to get rid of that 6. 9 boat anchor and get a Dodge with a Cummins. I've had experience with that 6. 9 diesel ford and in my opinion it's not worth putting much money into it. Just my 3 cents.

Grizzly,

The man has a 7. 3 IDI non-turbo. I brought up the 6. 9, since the 7. 3 was a punched out 6. 9. I don't disagre with you necessarily. I don't have fond memories of either 6. 9 I owned or the trucks they were in. Two bad chapters in my very long book of lemons.

Well, that's a different story. I couldn't tell by his post.
