I took the pan for off the hydrostatic unit on our mower to repair a leak. After I got it put back on I found something I find disheartening. On the back there is a lever you pull that is supposed to disconnect the hydrostat you you can push the mower around. I pulled on this and the wheels will not spin freely. Now I wonder if something else is wrong. I didn't mess with anything in the unit, just pulled the pan, put some fresh silicone on, and put it back on. I have not put any fluid back in it. I guess I'll pull the pan back off again. :( Any ideas?

I have a John Deere L130 and it has the lever on rear that you are talking about. I have never tried pulling and turning the wheels while they were off the ground. I have used the lever a couple of times just to move the mower back or forward and it rolled easy.

Try rolling the mower on the ground and if rolls easy I would say you are all right.

My Hydrostatic drive unit is sealed, I can not change my fluid. I would try spinning the wheels while its jacked up off the ground for you but I am on the east coast of Florida right now and the Deere is on the West coast of Florida at my home.

I pulled the pan back off. The problem is there is a gear that acts like an idler between the dirve gear off of the pump, and the pinion gear. The gear was binding up, not letting it move. I cannot get it to line back up because the pump gear will not move. I have checked the linkage for the disconeect lever and everything seems tight as it should be. Any ideas?
