I am going to put a throw-out bearing in my 1990, 5spd, Getreg. Im haveing trouble getting the shifter out of the top of the trany. Any help would be great. Thanks, Larry
Should be able to put it in neutral, push down on the collar, and a quarter turn should let it come free. Now that I think about, there may be a snap ring on there also.
Yes there is a snap ring on the top which must first be removed, takes a good set of snap-ring pliers. Putting the shifter back in works best with a second set of hands to compress the spring while the other installs the snap ring.
Ok, I will be going home for Thanksgiveing wknd, so that is when I plan to tear into this project. My son has everything else ready to go on the truck. If we run into any more snags, Ill give another post. Thanks for the help. Larry
After the snap ring is out, push the shifter down, and give it a yank up. Sometimes there is a little burr worn on the edge it needs to go by to come out.
If the undercarriage is dirt encrusted or muddy, use a piece or 2 of plastic sheet and heavy rubberbands on the shift tower to keep dirt from contaminating the guts of your transmission. Lessons learned from "old ugly":-laf! Hope you dont run into the "fix one thing and another problem jumps up" game! GregH
