I have been having trouble with my truck starting so i took it to the dealership. They said that they thought it was the lift pump going out but they could not fix it because they did not have any mechanics that could do it. I replaced the pump my self on SAT. but i am still having the same problem. I took it to a local diesel shop here and it has been there all day and they still havent found anything wrong with it. The owner said it was acting like they should. WHAT COULD BE WRONG WITH IT... .....

First, Welcome to the TDR!!!

Second, can you provide some more info about your truck, year, etc, any mods...

Have you changed the fuel filter lately? thats the quickest fix. Other than that, you could have air leaking into your fuel system due to cracked lines, or possibly some other air leak at the prefilter or fuel heater. what were the condition of the fuel lines when you changed the pump?

good luck

the truck is a 1998 2500 4X4 12 valve dual exhaust, #8 plate, K&N airfilter, 33in tires. I just changed the filter about 1200 miles ago. the fuel lines look like they were in good condition.

They could look good, and leak air in but not leak fuel outwards. The 90° hose that comes off the fuel heater Is suspect along with the return and supply lines to and from the injector pump. An easy way to check lines is to pressurize the fuel tank to 10 lbs shop air and inspect the lines. Most folks around get at least 150-200K miles out of thier lift pumps. P7100 is also as bullet proof.

well i do have 178,000 miles on my truck. and there was never any work done to it until i got it. the owner before me kept track of all the work done to it.

An easy way to check to see if the LP is pumping fuel is to disconnect the 90° hose from the fuel heater and point it downwards into a bucket. Disconnect the fuel shutoff solenoid on the injection pump and crank the starter. This should produce a good amount of fuel in the bucket in a short peroid of time. The better way is to use a fuel pressure guage to see if its making good PSI. If the return and supply lines havent been touched in 178K, those would be the FIRST place Id start looking.

well i just got off the phone with the diesel shop and they said that they couldnt find anything yet except for the idle speed was too low. he said that he was going to let it set over night and see how it acts in the morning. hopefully there is nothing wrong with the engine. i guess i will find out tomorrow

One of the most common causes of hard starting is low idle. It's very easy to check. Give it a little pedal when you start it and see what happens. You don't say what kind of transmission you have. If it's an auto the idle should be 750 in gear with the AC on. If it's a manual then it's 750 with the AC on. 800 is better.

If it still starts hard then start looking for air leaks in the fuel supply system. Remember you can't see an air leak so if the hoses look ok that doesn't mean anything. Another place that is notorious for leaking air is the electrical connection to the fuel heater.

thanks for all the input. got the truck back from the shop today they said they couldnt find anything except for the idle speed was to slow... ... I also had them replace the rubber hose on the strainer to lift pump. she runs like a raped ape again... ... .
