First time to ask for help but I think I have a lift pump going out, I have 1999 quad cab 4x4 with a 5spd and 4:10s and 52 thousand miles on truck but have power max 2 and high flow injectors on it. It is hesitating under load and does not seem to have the power it used to. Was wanting to know how hard one is to replace and if any one around the Southern Indiana area could be trusted to do this job? Going to try to replace fuel filter this weekend and see if that helps. It looks like this is a pretty common problem on the 24 valve motors. If anyone could help I would really be thankfull.

Thanks

Darrell

Darrell,

I can't answer your question, but just hang on, there are plenty of guys on this board who can and will. I just wanted to say welcome and good luck.

Definately change your fuel filter first, and start doing it every 10,000 miles. Manual recommends 15,000, but I have seen a lot of them get pretty dirty by the time 15 rolls around. Doing it more often can't hurt. Get the filter at a Cummins center--DO NOT buy from Dodge, they will rip you off.

If the filter doesn't help your situation, more than likely you have a bad lift pump. Again, get the part at Cummins. $130 @ Cummins vs. $395 @ Dodge. You pick. :D

Changing the pump is pretty easy. All you need is a few rags, and some simple hand tools. If it's your first one, it'll take about an hour or so.

A fuel pressure test would be a good idea too. :D

Huh????

Are you serious Evan???? I swear it took me forever when I changed mine!:D

Truthfully, I've seen Evan R&R a lift pump (with factory fuel lines) in 15 minutes, just as he said he could... I timed him.:eek:

BTW Evan, excellent advice!

Guys thanks for the information I am changing the fuel filter today, the more I read on this site the more I think it is the lift pump. Don't rely think it is the filter because I change them every 6,000 miles but will still try it first.

I still have one more small question is the lift pump below and to the left of the fuel filter? If not then were is it located?

I think this site is graet an well worth the money, I'm going to spread the word down here in Indiana and try to get a few friends to join.

Thanks again it would have took my dealer for ever to figure this one out:confused:

Darrell, best tip I can give you if you change your lift pump is take the fuel filter housing loose from the engine after disconnecting the fuel lines, and sensor wire harness from it and set aside. It's full of fuel so if you keep it upright, you won't have to fill it again. This will really pave the way to clearly seeing the lift pump and getting both arms in there. Should be a piece of cake from there! I changed mine out at 28K just so it wouldn't catch me by surprise.

Cummins part #3938435 for the lift pump.

Thanks again, my brotherinlaw works at a UHL truck sales here in New Albany, IN and he got me a new liftpump for $90 and I,m going to put it on as soon as it comes in. He got it trew cummins in Louisvelle,KY but they didn't have it and new there was one in the U. S. some where but not were will now more about when it will come in tommorow.

To everyone else that has not had this problem but has a early 24valve, when the pump goes it goes fast my truck runs like a Power Stroke!:(

Thanks to everyone that helped me with this problem and I now know I made the right choice about joining this site. You were all a big help:p Unlike My local dealer who insisted it was bad fuel or that I didn,t change the filter right.
