I don't know about the rest of you guys but I had never heard of the gas fumes trick before, I guess it would compare to a small shot of starting fluid.

I'm going to remember that one.

Really? I don't like it, as I've seen a rag get jerked away from the holder and guess where it goes... ...... . #@$%! I much prefer brake parts cleaner, propane, or starting fluid... ... . but, whatever you have to do to get it fixed, right?

I am saving it for a situation where I didn't have anything else at hand. A good firm grip on the rag would be a good idea... ...

I don't think it would take but a whiff on the rag to troubleshoot the no fuel issue.

We have a product at work called Shop Solve, made by Castle Products. It is the best parts/brake cleaner I have ever used, we have done tests out in the shop with other brands and they are only half as effective.

It also makes a good starting fluid but do not use it for starting indoors, the fumes after going through a diesel engine are not good for you.

We had a few lazy techs years back that would pound the Shop Solve to an engine rather than bleed the fuel system, I never agreed with that. I was always taught to bleed the fuel system rather than crank the starter to death or use a can of ether.

I've always used WD-40. Works just as good, no nasty side effects, trick is you have to spray it into the intake manifold, it won't make it past the turbo and intercooler, or at least when it does, you have already sprayed waaayyy to much in there and you get a surprise.

Yeah, I'm not much on any of 'em, and hate to use starting fluid, let alone ether, but on these tractors, it's hard not to, some of the time. Filling the filters helps, but without a manual prime, it's hard to get 'em started sometimes... ... . especially when it's cold. These old versatiles, if the fuel is low in the tanks, it has to lift the fuel over 4 feet to get where it needs to be... ... . and the ports are always stuck shut from being exposed to the weather, and if you open 'em, they'll leak diesel when running, and air when sitting. Ugh.
