Need Help!

Have a 5. 0 engine in a '89 Mercury,82,000mi. , losing coolant, no sign of leak on the outside. Anyone know of any Ford sites where I might get some help! TIA jps

The freeze plugs sometimes leak but no coolant makes it to the ground, engine heat evaporates it. Look for a white trail down the side of the block.

I've seen intake manifold gaskets leak coolant into the intake runner. It will leave no signs until the leak gets pretty big.

I dont mean this as I've seen it specifically with 5. 0's, just in general.

Not sure where your heater core is, but I had a car do that once and it was leaking from the core and running under the carpet. Also there was the slight smell of coolant inside the car.

For the most part, theyre located on the passenger side under the dashboard.

I should have thought of that... ... .....

Check your oil dipstick, not sure if you'll see separated fluids or not, the ones I've seen, the oil and coolant blend together. I had an 8N tractor that had a cracked block that would allow the two to seap together. In the end, I could add oil to the radiator and coolant to the block and it all ended up together anyway. It's all been restored and sold now. My brother has an 8. 1 liter v8 gasser in his chevy and it did the same thing. He was losing coolant and couldn't figure out where. He eventually found it in his oil pan. He got a new motor from GM and they deemed it as a porous block.

You could always go get a pressure tester and test the cooling system. They don't cost much and very simple and handy little tool. Also the cap may be bad and you are loosing it while driving. The heater cores on those are prone to leaking. You would usally get a strong coolent smell and the windows will fog up if you use defrost before you would notice it low on coolent though.
