I have blown my turbo on a '03. I am stuck on the road near Tucumcari, NM. I also blew all my oil out through the exhaust. What does this mean? I'm in the middle of no where and really need help. I'll leave my cell phone for one of you kind gentlemen. 928-279-4224. Please help, desperate!

I called him and he needs a TDR guy around Tucumcari NM.

His location is east of tucancari at the NM way station west of I40

I am in FL trying to help coordinate for him.

Seems he thinks he blew his turbine.

I put him in contact with Rip Rook to see if Rip can help him out.

Update @ 1500 EST (3:00 pm)

At about 10:30 am EST I got him in touch with Rip Rook and Rip got him in touch with Pier's who has turbos.

He had a course to follow to get the turbo exchanged, however additional options are always welcome in a case like this.

I have not heard back since 10:30.

If he was blowing smoke out the exhaust, his intercooler is full of oil. Depending on whether or not the compressor rubbed (I'll bet it did), the intercooler might also be full of aluminum debris. With any luck, the intercooler caught the compressor impeller trash, and none made it into the engine, but I'd check.

In addition to changing out the turbo (be sure to pre-lube it and to check the drain line for debris), I would:

1. Remove the intercooler and piping.

2. Inspect the air piping between the intercooler and intake elbow.

2. a. If debris is found in this air piping, remove the intake elbow and inspect the intake plenum/manifold area in the head.

2. b. If debris is found in the intake plenum/manifold, one must assume that it's in the cylinders. Time to remove the head.

3. If no debris is found downstream of the intercooler, have the intercooler and all air piping professionally cleaned.

4. Reassemble.

5. Remove or turn down the box before blowing another stock HY35W-9 turbo.

Rusty,

I called him and he is at a Cummins shop somewhere around where it happened. The intercooler is being steam cleaned, it was full of oil.

I talked to him about continuing toward the cylinders and checking the intake manifold and keep on going toward the cylinders including removing the head for inspection.

He thanks you for your input. I thank you as well :)

follow-up

Sorry I never posted a reply on this guys. I was a bit disgrunted to say the least with the shop that did my repairs. I then went home and took some time off to recooperate. First of all I must thank you both for the kindness and help leading my way for repair. Big advise NEVER BREAKDOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT, YOUR SCREWED!

Firtst I unhooked my trailer at the weigh station and had the DOT call a wraecker for me( I thought they would be regulated... guess I'm wrong)

$165 tow 23 miles to the cummins shop.

Cummins shop, repaced turbo, cleaned intercooler, replaced AFE Pro7 air filter, Oil and filter... that's all I can think of at the moment, oh yea couple of hoses. $2150 total.

Total cost of breakdown $2315, loss of three days in a motel plus paying an employee $50 a day and feeding him to boot. Not a good week. I am now hearing a noise out of this turbo when I declerate I don't like. almost sounds like a a noise when a bearing is dry and going bad. Does it mostly when I'm pulling my trailer and abruntly let my foot off the accelarator to fast. I'm thinking of taking it back to cummins while it's still fairly new and may-be under warrenty. But I will have to wait until I have a little time and remove my TST power box. Incidently, I will not run my power box above 3 when I am pulling, and set the EGT cut off at 1250. So I don't think the TST causede the damage. I dunno. I did remove my TAG unit and my employee threw it out by accident so I think that little thing will be history for me, I doidn't really see much difference with or without plus I have been reading some guys been having it dis-lodge and attack there turbo. Don't need that happening. Any ways, I want to thank TDR and it's members for an awsome job and all the help, esspecially Bob he called me personally several times during my breakdown and was truly concerned. Not a lot of guys out there like that anymore. Anyone with suggestions on that turbo noise, please let me know, I don't need to go through this experience again anytime soon.

turbo huff / bark

I'm stealing this from member krs:

"When the engine is loaded, very high turbine speeds are required for the turbo charger to provide intake manifold boost. When the fuel is suddenly cut off, the exhaust volume collapses and the turbocharger rapidly spins down. As the turbine looses speed, it looses it's ability to sustain the manifold pressure and compressed air rushes backward from the manifold and through the turbocharger. The momentary airflow reversal is not harmful and produces the short pSSHTT sound. "

I'd say you must be loaded pretty heavy to hear it that often. The only time I've heard it was when I was stuck in the mud with my '02.
