I hope someone out there knows if the Cummins engine uses a full screen on the oil pickup or has a bypass. An E-clip broke off the lift pump arm and ended up in the motor. Does anyone know if it is safe to drive the truck ?

Also would you believe that I drove around for a week with the lift pump NOT working:eek: Someone please explain that one to me please.

Not sure what you mean by "full screen on the oil pickup or has a bypass. " but it looks like the lift pump is fairly simple in operation. I have the manual on this if you want to, drop me an E-mail with your FAX number. I can send you a fax of this section its a 2 pager.

The E-clip your talking about ended up where???? If it ended up in the fuel line then you'll probably find it sitting in your fuel filter somewhere. If the E-clip your talking about is the one operating the lift pump arm off the cam shaft..... looks like it entered the lubricating system. I can't tell where that sucker could have ended up. I even pulled out the Cummins manual . . nada.

Sounds like a call into Cummins or Chrysler to be sure!!!!!!!(try 1-800- Diesels (343-7357) or their website)

As for why you were still able to drive, probably because your fuel pump is still operating and doing all the work, but probably not at peak performance. Thats the beauty of our diesels, they are almost bullet proof. The engines can have several issues but they still keep putting out. Ya gotta love it!!!

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!!!

The new lift pump is on, that was a piece of cake. The clip is inside the engine. I drained the oil, filtering the oil with my wife's new panty hose as the oil came out, no clip found. What really burns me is the old pump was installed in January 2001 when I rebuilt the engine. Is anyone else getting crap parts from Napa ? I have had to send back 3 sets a calipers because of ****ty workmanship(torn boots, frozen pistons, stripped bleeder screws) and those were right out of the box.

the pickup on mine had a screen

yeah I use to spend over a thousand a mounth at napa just about every repair I did it seems for about the last year came back and had to replace the same part again well two is my limit the third time i went to the dealer I buy just about all my parts from the manufacturer ford dodge cummins bosh boy there expensive but when I rebuilt mine in january 2001 I bought all cummins parts, so far at least the new lift pumps pumping I figure the old oil cooler blowing (boy does that make a mess) is my fault for not spending the money and thats the only problem so far
