Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) COMP OR CatCHer

I am new to the TDR, so forgive my crazy questions. I have an Edge EZ chip and NEED some more HP and torque. I don't do much towing, only a small ATV trailer. My question is, do I upgrade to an Edge comp box, or get bigger injectors, what are the pro's and con's of both. I have a 99, 2500, 5 spd man, 4 inch straight pipe, kore chase system, leer cap, kn filter,

Depending on how much more power you want... . You can get real crazy and put down a lot of green to get HP. But you can upgrade your EZ to a comp box. Now there are 2 different types of the comp box. There is just the regular comp and then there is the Drag Comp. The difference between the two is that the comp will de-fuel after 2700RPM, whereas the Drag Comp produces more fuel after that RPM range. If your going to do the comp, it would be a good idea to install bigger injectors because you are moving more fuel. Also another concern would be the stock fuel system. Most stock LP pumps can't give the VP44 what it wants, so most the time you have to upgrade the fuel system to support the comp and the injectors. The most common upgrade fuel pumps are like the FASS, AirDog, RASP systems. Also you can upgrade the exhaust housing on your turbo if cash is a big issue. This only costs a 1/3 of what a new turbo costs. This makes the turbo spool quicker. Just a few ideas, theres many more.

Are you looking for more power on the top end, or are you looking for more drivability on the bottom end? CCalvin gave you some good information. Overall, it really depends on where you want to go with it. Without setting some sort of HP or drivability goal, you could wind up spending a lot more by not doing it right the 1st time. Also, it would be wise to build balanced (air/fuel/drivetrain) hp along the way so that you are not taxing the system.

Got Gauges?????

My truck's profile reflects having stumbled across real good TDR deals on items like the Drag Comp and DD3s. It also reflects replacing defective parts with high performance versions such as the HR-VP44 and soon to be installed CaTCHer programmed ECM. Unfortunately I cannot use the high end of the power very often because of the stock HY turbo. So, I am effectively way overfueled for the given lack of air, which at the very least causes high EGTs. Having decent power and not being able to use it safely, and/or put it to the ground (stock clutch) is kind of a bummer.

Your HX35 turbo will buy you a little more than my HY, but which injector do you want to invest in? EDM 1. 6s (nice towing model) or EDM 4s (fun factor) or something in between? Assuming that you installed the wastegate elbow, how much boost are you running? Much over 30ish and you are pushing hot air with a stock turbo, which is counter productive. Should you go with a comp or a drag comp? It all depends on what your goal is. The best thing you could do is attend an event, talk to people, and go for a ride in a couple of trucks with different performance levels. When I first started, people would ask how much HP was I looking for. How the hell did I know what 350 or 450 or 550 HP felt to drive.

CJurasek, Good questions and a great place to ask!

Just some food for thought...

There's nothing crazy about your questions. I strongly recommend boost, egt & fuel pressure gauges right away. The Comp delivers a lot of bang for the buck, but injectors tend to deliver the power a little smoother & with less egt. Mach 1. 5's & an EZ could overpower my stock clutch, so don't expect to go very far in the search for power without an up grade in that department.

Thanks for all of the help. My first purchases will be gauges, then a clutch, my current stock clutch has about 110,000 miles on it and still seems fine. I'm going to hold off on more juice untill I get those two things taken care of. I like the talk about the 275 injectors, and the price, but I'm worried that it won't be enough HP and torque. Thanks again for all the info.

You are a quick student ;)

Very wise priorities in my book! 275s are a very slight improvement and they are old technology. If you are looking at those, then I recommend going with EDM 1. 6s, you will not be disappointed, and there will be a much better resale market if you decide to go larger.

FWIW,

Bill
