227,000 miles ran low on oil, changed oil, leaking severly, added castrol synthetic, so now, after my cranial/rectal surgery, what are my options? Transmission is grumbling even in neurtal and grinding between a couple of gears, and noisy in all gears. So, what can I do... . new dealer transmission? nah, junkyard? rebuild the one in there? rebuilt one? What years do I consider? Is there a clutch upgrade to consider? I plan on keeping truck forever. The truck is a 1996 2500 4wd ext. cab. Thanks in advance, I live in the middle of NC. Steve

Depending on money, 1'st (most expensive) choice would be convert to 6 spd. , 2nd. , ship yours to Standard Transmission in Fort Worth and either have it rebuilt, or get a exchange with new innards and the fully splined mainshaft. Or 3rd, buy the complete bearing, gear, fully splined mainshaft kit from Standard and install yourself or have a local shop install.

None of the choices are cheap. Around 1100 I think for the full kit to do yourself.

I guess a third choice is a low mileage unit from a salvage yard.

Good luck, RJR

If you want...

to go with a six speed, Standard Transmission can provide everything you need.

You may want to go with another unit of some sort. It may be pretty messy inside your current one. It would be worth a look I think; it may help you make some of the decisions.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help, I am looking at Man trans in tallahassee fl. $950 12mo unlim. mil. warranty, upgrades, etc and they will work with me on core. After this post we can archive this, I will do the work this week. Wish I had the time to rebuild... seems much cheaper. How much is the 6 speed and is it more difficult to change to vice using a 5 speed? Is the rear seal replaceable during this procedure? Thanks, Steve

I replaced my 5spd with one from man trans last month. Recieved it in two days. Very happy no problems works great. Got the special trans fluid from auto zone very inexpensively. (if you recieve my core back itll have the super low granny 1 st gear).
