Anyone know where i can get a battery with the same cold crank amps as the original ? The replacement battery i have now never had the same power as the original and lately just barely starts the cummins.

Yea, I know what you mean:rolleyes: I put a new one in mine last year, I think it's about 975 CCA or something and when cold it doesn't like it too well. I would go to the local big rig shop, Cummins dealer, or even a tractor parts store. You're bound to find a big enough battery at one of these places. Hope you find one soon.

Mine came with a big Die Hard (bought truck used). It's still going and going, and going... . This is the only battery I've had in it so I can't compare, but it always starts very well even when very cold and not plugged in.

You might also check into the Optima. I am sure impressed with the yellow top in my Jeep. Has never let me down when winching, etc. I'm not sure if they make a big enough single battery for a 1st gen. Some of the 2nd gen guys are running two Optimas.

I'm using a Napa Select battery. Its been in about 2 years and still doing fine. It had a higher cca than the recommended battery. Also might try a John Deere dealer, they usually have good batteries for pickups. alonzo

If you go here and use the battery selector you will see, that the only battery that is a direct replacement of the stock battery is the Sears Die Hard (of the brands listed). This selector lists 15 different brands of batteries so finding your favorite should be easy.

I just put in an Optima red top. Cranks the engine over really fast.

Went the whole route and also put in all new cables. Went to a battery store and bought all the cable and crimp connectors and made them up myself for about $30.

I got a interstate battery for mine. It was the biggest industrial battery they had and it cost about $130. 00, i've never had a problem with it and i think it is about 950 CCA.

I bought a new battery from Wal-Mart last year. It is the new Extreme Max series they carry. It is the new ones in the yellow case. I put mine in about December 2001 and has been trouble free since. It is a 1000 CCA battery and started my truck when it was 5 above last winter and my computer was shot, which means no grid heater to help. Anyways I just got one for my neighbor and put it in his truck, because his NAPA gold battery died. They have a 3 year free replacement warranty and a 6 year warranty all together. For $59. 96 you can't go wrong in my opinion. Bill

The stealer has a battery that meets the specs for our trucks.

I did not purchase one of those though, I bought a Red Top Optima Blem at a swap meet about a month ago, it is a larger size than the standard ones they sell at places like Costco, don't know the specifics on cranking amps but it really turns the mighty Cummins over quickly, it's been in the low thirtys in the mornings this week and it turns the truck right over, even the one morning I turned the key before the wait to start light went out.

Happy Rammin,

Caleb

Trojan Battery

 The Trojan batteries are a real good battery in my opinion. Where I worked, we went trrough many, many, many excides before we switched to trojan. End of battery problems. Just my experience and it works for me, kinda hard to find though. Tim:)

Bought WalMarts barely start maxx- (everstart maxx)1000 cca @32 F. , 950 @0 F. At about 40 F it took a little cranking to start up. I didnt even want to see how it worked when it really got cold. Went to local auto electric dealor, had heard about Deka Batteries. Bought a group 31 -big truck batt, 1260cca @32 F, 1150cca @0 F for $80. Talk about who cares if my preheater doesnt work. Fires right up with slight turn of key. The semi truck group 31 battery fits perfectly, was even in there catalog as the next step up. If you can find a Deka Battery give it a try, I like mine alot.

Thanks guys for all the response. I just called sears about the Die-Hard that fits our trucks and they said i would have to order the battery as they don,t have any in stock.

The battery went bad on my '92 when it was just over a year old. At that time I couldn't find a GOOD replacement. I got out the welder and built an angle iron carrier that I bolted to the original tray and put in TWO smaller automotive batteries. I do not remember the size of the new batteries.

I have run over 250,000 miles this way. I replace both batteries when one goes bad... usually every 3-5 years. Also gives the option of coming home on one battery if the other goes completely bad!

I've had good luck with the Interstate "workaholic" group 31p hdm 950cca. The 950cca is very conservative.

The 1st one lasted over 7 years.

I checked out the Optima which has a lower cca. They are made and owned by Interstate battery but the warranty was cut back 1 year and yes they will crank our engines over but will shorten life I was told. Thats why the 2nd gens have 2 batterys because our diesels are hard on battery's.

Something to think about.

Mark,

Are you saying that the Optimas life will be shortened by having to turn over our trucks or are you saying the life of my starter will be shortened because it's not getting enough juice?

RDusch has 2 Optimas in some kind of mount like keimmmo has, there was a picture of it on his website.

Thanks,

Caleb

Caleb,

I was told by Interstate, battery life would be shortened. Should use 2 of them and as you know they aren't cheap. Can almost buy 2 " workaholics" for the price of 1 Opitma. I bought directly from Interstate. Sorry for any confussion.

I bought an Interstate Workaholic this year for @$100 at a big truck parts place. So far so good, we'll see how it does this winter.

I think I'm an Interstate fan now. I have a Group 27 Interstate Battery in an old Chrysler right now that'll be 10 years old if makes it through winter!

Andy

I"m pretty sure that there is a battery listed at 1185 CCA with deep cold reserve used for marine apps on our engines. One other I THINK was rated at 1350 CCA. This was while looking up Cummins Engines on the web using Google search.

Worth a look see.

Also I think there is a series 32 or 33 battery that is better'n the original battery too. I may be wrong though...

Interstate

I have a Workaholic Interstate in my truck that is six years old and is doing fine. We also run three of them on the three old Case diesel tractors. The $105 I pay for them is a good investment. They will last. There is nothing more frustrating than a weak battery, that is why I try to stick with Interstate. Just my experience, hope it helps you a bit.
