Can I simply buy a new free flow muffler and tailpipe ? I'm guessing it's called a "cat Back" system but I don't want to cut that 4" pipe thats welded to the cat. I just want to attach a muffler and tailpipe with hangers already in the oem position. Stainless or aluminumized ? Sounds simple, but i don't know what to do. I'm thinking of just buying a replacement muff / pipe from DC for just under $300 just to get it over with.

Please help !

You can buy a whole new system from www.BigExhaust.com for less than what some other aftermarket companies want for a cat-back.

I was in the same boat. Muff and tailpipe were shot. I ended up buying a complete 5" turbo-back system from Big Exhaust w/out the muff. Not counting the shipping, it was right around $300 with their sale price and the $40 TDR Member discount.

Came with 4" downpipe, a pipe with 4" on one end and 5" on the other, 2 other lengths of pipe and tailpipe. Also came with hangers. I used band clamps on the joints.

In issue 23 of TDR I tested exhaust stuff and if you are below about 330-350 hp, 3" is fine but the Walker 21468 3" muffler helps and remember the cat can get partially plugged with soot over time. Your head and tail pipes are 3". The only 4" part is the exit from the cat and entry to the stock muffler. Around the above hp range, you should be considering the HX40 turbo and it is intended for 4" exhaust.

I just put the JRE exhaust in my truck a few months ago. I chose it above the others because it was 14 ga. steel instead of 16 ga. I thought the extra metal might hold up a little longer. The install was a lot easier than I had expected.

Any 4 or 5 inch system would do though I'm sure. Better to do that than try to skimp at that point. Also, make sure who ever's system that you buy, the individual parts are available (reasonbly priced) so you can change them when you need to down the road.
