I posted this in the 12 valve engine/powertrain forum, but since it is an emergency situation, I wanted to try this too. Thanks for any help/advice yall might have...

The 5-speed transmission in my 1998 work truck (3500 cab/chassis 4. 10 gear 2 wheel drive) took a dump today. It will not pull in any gear and has a grinding noise that does not increase with different gear selections. It will still shift into any gear easily, but will not pull at all. Seems like an input shaft or main shaft problem by what I can tell.

I am looking to (quickly) buy a complete replacement transmission. I will need the quickest, most reliable way of doing this. The truck is in my shop right now and the transmission will be removed tomorrow (friday the 28th). The truck has 130,000 miles on it and has a nearly new SouthBend CON OFE clutch (installed @ approx. 110,000 miles). Who do any of yall recommend for a NEW transmission? I want NEW, because I want reliable... I depend on this truck daily to make my living and have never had good luck buying someone elses troubles with "rebuilt" crap. I have heard of a "Bloominthol" or something like that, but don't know the spelling so I could not get any search results. Thanks for any advice!

John

btw, I am not sure if they will interchange, but if I had a choice, I would prefer the earlier style 4500 (like my 1996) because I like the shift throw and feel better... I reckon right now a begger can't be too choosie though!

If you bought the 12. 25" clutch, then your symptoms sound like a broken clutch disk.

I'll bet you will pull that transmission down, and find the center spun out of the disk.

If you tow much weight at all, or have the HP over 375-400RWHP. You DEFINATLY NEED to consider the 13" upgrade. It's pricey, but the clutch is 3 times stronger than the 12. 25" clutch.

Blumenthals is a great company. I got a re-manned 6-speed for only a couple hundred more than a new 5-speed. The 6-speed was one of the top 3 upgrades I did to my truck.

Fixing to pull the transmission out this morning.

As for the 13" upgrade, that is what I did on my 1996 truck. I LOVE that clutch. If this one has come apart, I will definately go for the upgrade. I sure hope it is just the clutch, but will let yall know as soon as I do! Thanks again for the information!

Clutch

Merrick, you were right. The center spun out of the clutch hub. A new 13" CON OFE is fixing to be ordered. Thanks for yall's input. I jumped the gun thinking the crappy transmission was shot, but maybe it will make it a while longer. BTW, I do not tow with this truck, but it stays LOADED full time (9' enclosed service body FILLED with tools, supplies and parts) and the engine is "turned up" a little. I love the 13" CON OFE in my personal 1996 model truck and this one is gonna get the same treatment. Anyone considering a 'standard' CON OFE clutch, take my advice and DON'T DO IT! I have HATED this clutch since day one (jumpy, chattery, hard to shift gears). GET THE 13" CON OFE! I learned the hard way on this one.

Thanks for yall's help when I got in a panic.

WOW ,i wish i would have asked in this forum before i had my transmission and transfer case fully rebuilt, then found out that it was the dam con o disk $2500 later.
