egrout, I'm a bit confused by your post. You tried the gauge pre- fuel filter and it worked, tried it post filter at the inlet to the VP44 and it did not, tried it again at the inlet to the FF and it did not work, right ? I'm not familar with the way the Briar's test gauge installs, does it require you to remove the schrader valve to get a reading or do you simply remove the black cap and screw the fitting onto the Schrader for the reading ( guessing it's this method). There's really not alot inside to go wrong, is it possible that the valve is stuck and not depressing when you place the FP fitting onto the Schrader ? If the valve is stuck and not depressing, you will not get a reading. If you remove the black cap, can you feel the valve depressing when you push it inward ? If not, go to a local bike or hardware store and pick up a tire valve removal tool, loosen the valve and then re-tighten same and try to push it in. If it pushes in by hand pressure, you should be able to get a FP reading. This is of course assuming that Briars gauge uses a fitting that adapts directly to the Schrader without the need to remove the valve.
I just checked and I have the complete Schrader valve assembly from my truck, which I removed from the inlet of the VP44 when I installed a Weber fitting. It's yours if need be for the asking. I also have the valve only ( the part that you remove with a simple tool I explained above) from when I first was using a gauge to monitor FP pre-filter, again it's your if you need it. My guess is that the valves have become stuck and are not depressing when you place the fitting on the Schrader. Try the tool first and if they are stuck closed. If you have no sucess, PM me and I'll ship out what I have to you.
I think the check valve Cummins was referring to is the one that is located in the return line for the VP44, not sure.
