Amsoil dual bypass

I work at a hospital, our emergency generator doesn't meet an accrediting agency's criteria for load testing (30% of name plate). It's a Cummins model VTA-28-G5 (900 hp @ 1800 RPM). I already checked, it's too big to mount in the bed of my truck. :{ :-laf

Anyway, we need to monitor EGT to meet NFPA 110, the accrediting agency will basically let us slide on not meeting the 30% of name plate if we can monitor EGT and keep it over Cummins' 650 degree minimum.

Where the heck can I get a pyrometer for this thing? Cummins local isn't any help. It has twin turbos (Sweet) and about 6" post turbo the exhaust pipes already have tapped and plugged collars to accept the pyro probes. I'd like to monitor both EGT's if possible with a duplex pyro, if not two simplex will do.

Appreciate the help.

One thing to check is what you're going to use to power the pyro. Most diesel generators, larger ones anyways have a 24 volt starting system so if you're going to power it from the batteries you need a pyro for a 24 volt system.

True Tim, but most pyros don't need a power source except for the lighting.

You can get around that with just a 24 volt bulb.

Thanks Guys.

Illflem - I thought about the lamp issue and figured I'd just not worry about gage lighting - however, a 24w lamp will do it. Thanks.

Why do you need to keep it ABOVE 650* ?

I'm not familiar with big motors. Why do you need to keep it hot? Is it cylinder wash down? Emissions?

Thanks,

If you're looking for a multi-channel industrial engine pyrometer like an Alnor, Altronic or similar, I'd do an Internet search for Gerhardts. They have locations all over the oil patch. Larger industrial engines are normally equipped with these pyrometers that allow you to monitor EGT from each cylinder as well as pre-turbo and post-turbo temps. Some (probably most nowadays) have alarm and shutdown features that can be tied into the engine control system.
