As some of you know, I lost the water pump on my 2013 RAM 6.7 on vacation 07/18/2016. Truck has been in dealer (Hatch Bros) in S/Az since Monday 7/18 for water pump repair. Going to pick it up today finally.

I know the water pump, hoses, fan etc were changed by another dealer under 30K miles as the first owner complained about the high temps it was running when towing, as I did/have. Dealer answer, "within specs" blah blah..got it. Mag-hytec pan pulled 20 degree's off transmission, but engine still runs to hot IMHO...;) And MHO don't count..LOL

What type of coolant/part number does the 2013 and up use? I know its a "OAT" and not HOAT as before. What color is the OAT coolant ? I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure how the pump would go south in 30k miles....I want to pull the trigger and get rid of this truck as I have lost all my faith and confidence in it. Still debating yah nay etc.

What if anything would using the wrong coolant do? Hotter temps, lower temps etc ? Seals go out etc etc?

TIA

4th gens run hot, that is just the nature of the newer emissions regulations. Higher engine temps initially result in higher emissions, BUT, the extra heat greatly helps the DPF and such to do their jobs better. It is not uncommon at all for the engine temp to be 210 give or take.
I work on Caterpillar equipment and the new emission stuff is causing hell for us too. Try telling a customer the his brand new 1 million dozer is fine with engine temps of 210+ when his old dozer would barely hit 195. Or that the same dozer needs a new spark plug for the DPF to regen properly.
New diesels run hotter so that they can meet emissions requirements, and they are engineered to survive those temps for the normal lifespan of the engine. It is just the way things are gonna be for the foreseeable future.

This is what your looking for.

My 2012 would run around 200-210 degrees. My 2013 runs around 185-198. As for the water pump failing it's a crap shoot if you get a good one or not. They all seem to suck. I've tried OEM and after market and had very much the same results they seem to fail around 30k to 75k miles. I wonder if the belt is too tight maybe?

Moose, I was basing my running hot on the 2 other cummings that I had prior to this one. 2012 dually-non def , and a 2013 DEF before this one. The first 2012 and 2013 were nearly identical in heat towing etc. This one runs 20+ hotter. The fan does not kick on as the first two did cooling those down, but waits till it hits 217-220 degree's before kicking the fan in hard. Last (2) 210-215 fan on full etc.
