Well it finally happened. Lost 5th gear about 100 miles from my destination in Leesburg, Florida. Need to find good repair facility to pull tail shaft and inspect gear, splines and install modified retainer nut kit, if feasible.

Has this approach to repair been satisfactory? If splines or gear damaged, would it be best to get complete replacment from someone like Standard?

All advice appreciated.

People have drove the 4500 for many miles without fifth gear, no problems. I know I am going to replace mine (when it goes, everyone says it will, but 100,000 now and no problem) with complete transmission from standard, have not decided whether to go six speed or stay with the five. I don't know of any shops down there, but you might find a reputable shop in the TDR mag? Good luck. .

If you can do without your truck for a week or two, you can pull it out, strap it down to a pallet, and ship it to Standard transmission. Thats what I did and there prices are quite reasonable. Fully splined main, new bearings, a few synchros came to about 1K

Williams Diesel Service in Ocala recommended Tek Transmission in Ocala. Having experience with Williams, took their advice. Tek said they would do the work as per my request, but would not warranty the repair.

They charged two hours labor ($128), nut modification kit ($53), plus the cost of new transmission lube. I now have 5th gear again. We'll see how long the repair lasts. Failure occurred at 123,000 miles. If the repair lasts as long as it took for the initial failure to occur will be happy.
