Should I add R-134?

I've posted in 24v as well, but need help!!

TDR members... . I sent my truck over to a TDR member recommended testing station in the SF east bay (Fremont). They would not test my truck because it didn't have a catalytic converter. I am absolutely certain that a 98. 5 24v truck didn't come with one, but it did come with a 'resonator. ' The tech said that every book/reference he checked said that it needed a cat and would not test it.

Can anyone help me out with a reference? I'm going to call a dealer (no local dealer anymore... most of them closed by the Obama takeover!).

thanks in advance.

I don't believe any of the 2nd gen. 24 valve engine had a cat. The purpose of the 24V engine with its centralized injector was to reduce PM emissions. Cats were not required again until the 2004. 0 model year when they were used on the CR engine in NY and California and several other states. They were the 235 HP version of that engine. 2004. 0 marked the beginning of the NOX reduction in the five California emission states.

None of the 2nd gen 24valves were built with a cat. The data plate will confirm .

The Smog test tech needs to do some more learning on how to use his books.

Guys the problem is Cali has skewed information as they don't count the half year change. Mine is a 04. 5 and came with a cat . Tech says they don't have the half year changes so it is an 04 which doesn't come with a cat. Just another example.
