Archived need some help cyphering codes...

... . o. k. here is what has transpired the past couple of days. First the engine started missing horribly and belching black smoke,it then through a map sensor code. This happened before when the Edge box took a dump,so I unhooked the Comp and all seemed fine,cleared code and it stayed gone. NOW tonight the tach went crazy and it through a po336 ckp code,which I'm assuming is the crank sensor right???It also had some undocumented codes which were 253,380,and252. Cleared them all and the 380 came back but no check engine light. Anyone know what the undocumented codes are???I'm going to get a crank sensor,cause the code read ckp out of range,am I barking up the right tree,and how much of a pain is it and where is it located??? all help much appreciated as I am also trying to get ready for Carlisle at the same time and want to tow a trailer this weekend. How come S#*T always happens at the wrong time ... Doug

Thanks Ed,I guess I should have done the search first,there's lots of info. on this all with the same symptoms. The dealer has one $57,of course I can get it from the Cummins dealer for $37 but they have to order it. I might get one for a spare. You going to Carlisle???

The 0252 and 0253 have something to do with the fuel injection pump solenoid valve, I have gotten the 0253 before but I haven't quite figured out why yet. I will check my book and let you know exactly what they are.

thanks Tim,I installed the crank sensor and all is fine so far. Went to Carlisle and back without any hiccups. Hopefully I ain't losing my Vp-44 . Let me know what you come up with... Doug
