Now this is Dads truck I'm working on here.

1998. 5 5 speed. 275's. Comp and an AFE. Other than that stock.

Was running great till it got cold. (we had like -4 here this morning)

It gets parked in our shop at nights. Shop temp around 55 deg.

I run Stanadyne additive in it that includes an anti-gel.

So I headed to Home Depot this morning and only made it about a mile.

Truck just quit. Had great fuel press, I filled it up the night before.

I called my buddy who has a rollback and he took me back to my shop.

I was thinking '' ah what the heck its got 50,000 on the lift pump I bet thats it"

so I put in a new lift pump and fuel filter.

Started right up. I moved it outside to idle and it promptly died. Maybe 30 seconds to a minute after I got it outside.

Pushed it back into the shop and it started and idled for over 10 mins no problem.

I scanned for codes and got a

p0253 injection pump metering circuit A low

p0216 injection pump timing malfunction

Now I've been throwing these two codes for over a year so I really don't think that could be it. Plus the fact that it runs fine in the shop.

About all I can think of is the IAT sensor might be screwing something up???

I don't know what else it could be really so I could use a little help here.

Thanks guys

Jeremy

Sounds like a leaking diaphram seal or seals. You put a lift pump on it but how was the LP pressure. It needs to be 13. 5psi under load. It probably is now with a new LP but if the LP pressure was low then you will need a pump. You are correct in saying that the IAT sensor may be bad but failures amount to 1% based on Bosch estimates and that is also what we have seen at our shop also. You probably need a VP44 and we do have them. Thanks, Brady 1-800-955-0476

Thanks guys,

I'm not saying it can't be the VP44 but it just dosen't make sense to me that it would run fine while sitting inside, and then die as soon as it hit the cold outside temp.

But then again these VP 44's do some strange stuff

Ok guys mark this down as another weird symptom of a dying/dead vp44.

Replaced it this morning and it's all good.

Thanks for the help!

Anytime you get an internal failure code for the injection pump don't beat yourself up looking... ... ... change the inj pump ;)

I would agree with that statement. the thing might be referred to as a smart pump but when it starts to fail (electronically) its not smart enough to tell you exactly what. 0216 in the most common code seen on a dying injection pump.

like you said, chalk this one up as a symptom.
