I'm looking at (finally) getting of the gas and getting a Diesel. Truck will be used for work and play, hauling a camper sometimes and pulling a flat deck trailer with building materials etc...

Not quite sure what to get though--there seems to be lots of conflicting advice about the 2nd gen 24 valves... I'd add as FASS as soon as I picked one up, but then there's the frame, front end and brake short comings

Here's my Question: What's my better buy, an 01-02 24v ext cab long box 4x4 6 spd with some mods already done (ie edge, some front end, exhaust) and around 100k on the clock, or a 3rd gen 03-04 with similar miles, bone stock for about the same price?

Planning on eventually doing a WVO conversion (check out dinofuelalternatives for some of the best new kits now for Cummins too)

Any comments or help appreciated, there's just so much info out there to sift through.

I'd take the newer one myself. I don't like the injector pump on the earlier 98. 5 thru 2002models. The pump is fuel lubed as you're aware of and may be a problem with certain types of WVO. That's why I shopped long and hard for a 1998 Quad cab 12 valver with oil lubed P7100 mechanical pump in it. It'll burn about anything I've fed into it well and is lubed with the engine oil. I've read some downfalls about the 03-04 trucks. If you can find a 3rd generation 2005 I'd go that way as they seem to have the new model problems ironed out and has common rail injection. So does the 03-04 models. Six speed is a great way to go as the auto trannys doesn't like power thru them. Hopefully somebody here on TDR will have more concise info for you. I'm surprised by lack of comments so far.

Thanks for the info Herb,

I've been searching for that elusive 12 valve ext cab long box... for over 2 months and haven't come accross a truck that hasnt' been bombed, neglected, has 200 k miles or both. That was initially my first choice but I guess I'm getting a bit impatient. Perhaps I should just hold my horses and wait for it to come along. I understand the fuel economy with the 12 valve was the best of all, plus no pesky computer problems. I was a bit curious that the guys over at Dino fuel alternatives first ram unit was for the CR injection, but I guess they've been dealing with that for a while with the 6. 0 powerstrokes. I agree with you that the VP44 would be a weak link for any alternative fuels and that's what is keeping me away from that truck. Happens to be a good selection of 24 valves out there though for a reasonable price...
