my a/c is slightly cool but wont get cold. the temp knob is not broke but on high the compressor clicks on and off constantly. it is like it's getting a signal that the temp control knob is at the lower side of the cool band. with all the controls on high ,shouldn't the compressor stay on for a while ??? one line of the a/c is ice cold and the other is hot. is there a sensor or etc. that might be going bad ??? could it be the actual temp control switch in the dash??? the problem just started today and was ice cold the last time a/c was used. also there are no leaks so i believe the system is fully charged. worked like new yesterday. any a/c techs. out there ???

Just had a buddy at work have his compressor replaced. . Worked great... quit for 30 minutes and started working again. It done this 2-3 time till it quit. He bought an aftermarket compressor for 1/2 the price dodge was asking but he had the dealer put it in. he spent around $700.

Hope thats not your problem. Good luck.

It is very hard to diagnose any problem without hooking up the gauges and checking the pressures. I would guess by your description that you have a blockage in the system. Most likely the fixed orifice tube is blocked up or almost blocked up. I would have someone hook up a set of gauges and find out. You would then need to recover the refrigerant and replace the tube and the filter/drier.

Iceman, the only temp. control your A/C has is when you turn the temp. knob to the right it allows hot water to come through the heater coil and thus raises the incoming air temp. It has a clutch cycling switch which cuts the compressor off when the refrigerant pressure reaches 25 lb. and back on when the pressure reaches 43 lb. The switch reads suction pressure of the compressor and is screwed into the side of the acumulator. On later models which have a PCM, there is a shutdown of the AC compressor when radiator coolant temp reaches 257deg. F or when the outside temp. is 30 deg. or less. My guess is that you are low on refrigerant or the clutch cycling switch is bad, it could also be a blockage as Mopars1 has said and you will just about have to get it hooked up to a set of gauges to find out for sure as he suggests.

ICEMAN the lines you mentioned one should be the low pressure line(liquid= cold),the other is the high pressure(gas=hot, smaller metal tubing). I think your problem is the compressor clutch or the clutch relay or swithes that are able to turn compressor off. Usually the compreesor will cycle on and off with low freon, but you found no leaks. If the compressor wasn't cycling on and off it could of been in the tempature control knob or the tempature door.
I check the compreesor clutch relay its in your PDC, High Pressure cut off switch, Low pressure cycling switch, compressor clutch. As mopars1 replied git someone to put gauges on it. This will rule out freon problem. I'm not a a/c tech but I have a walk-in cooler that I have to keep cool.

thanks for the info, the compressor was clicking on and off due to lack of pressure in the lines. i added a can of R134 and now compressor stays on as it should and a/c is as good as new !!! ( actually only took a half of a can to bring it back,,system would not accept any more )

Mine did the same thing from day one. First time the dealer looked at it they said it was getting down to 32 degrees out the vents (which is impossible), I called them on their lie... brought it to another dealer, they said it was low on R134-A... gets down to 39. 1 degrees now... measured it myself this time. It is either low, or the pressure switch it bad...

Good luck.

Hey Smoken, why do you think it's impossible for an a/c system to blow 32 degree air? I've worked on lots of cars that will blow even colder than that. A/C systems work the same way your freezer in your house does, I hope yours is colder than 32.
