I need some suggestions for my father-in-law's pickup. It's a 2000 4x4 3500, auto, 3. 54 (I think). It is going in this week for a new engine as his block cracked at 32k miles. This pickup has been a slug since he got it. After taking it in to the dealer numerous times, they authorized a teardown by Cummins. They dynoed it and did an engine teardown. They couldn't find anything wrong with it. They said the dyno results were somewhat low, but given it had an auto transmission it was still within "normal parameters".
What are some things that we could look at? I did a search and read a post by Jhellmers. It sounds nearly identical to the low power problems he was experiencing. A new lift pump was put on, that didn't help it.
Any ideas?
*dirty injectors?
*bad turbo?
*bad sensors?
*bad VP44?
I will go out and drive it after the engine is replaced so that I can give a more accurate picture of what it is or isn't doing. Basically, it just doesn't seem to have the power above 50-60 mph. I feel terrible for him because I talked him into a Dodge.
