Competition What's wrong with this cam?

Off Roading Glamis time

I have an early 1998 that was bought as a 1 ton cab and chassi. The truck had 235-16's on it stock. I made it a single wheel pickup and put some lift and 37's on it. The truck has 4:10's and the speedo reads about 8 mph slower than the truck is realy going. Does anybody know what parts/part #'s I need to correct this?Any info on what parts, and where to get them would be a great help.

Well I don't know a ton about the 2nd Gens but I don't think think there are any parts that you can buy. You can either take it to the dealer and have them recalibrate the speedo, or get a programmer or a chip like a Smarty or an Edge Attitude to do it.

I think the problem is that there are myriad of solutions. Do you want a mechanical or electrical solution? I don't know the newer trucks, but I have a mechanical ratio adapter between my VSS and the transfer case. Google ratio adapters and you will find lots on both the mechanical and electric types. Mine, I just had to select from a bunch of stock ratios and found one to fit. IIRC $30-40 range last year.

You might be able to do the flashy thingy too, but none of my computers are in a truck. I live in the 1st gen world.

I just went through the same on my 96 dually with 305/85/16 tires. Bought some new plastic speedo gears from Dodge. I asked some questions, counted teeth on the existing gear and added a gear with 3 or 5 more teeth. Now my truck with 37" tall tires is dead on. The gears are easy to change and are located on the side of the transfer case. Good Luck.

Or you could get really lazy and just get an add-on GPS setup with a GPS calibrated speedo. Good no matter what tire size you have. :D

That's what I'm talking about... no switching speedo gears, wiring, electronic add-on boxes, or any other crap. :-laf

DRadzierez,

What you need depends on which 1998 truck you have. I'm pretty sure that the ones built before January 1998 used a gear that was driven off the transfer case (or transmission for 2WD) to drive the speedometer. In that case you will need the appropriately sized gear for your case. See your Dodge dealer.

The newer, 1998. 5 model trucks, that were built in January 1998 and later, used an electronic signal to the speedometer. In that case you will need an electronic signal converter. The one I used on my 2000 truck was a TruSpeed, made by SuperLift, the suspension people. I bought mine from Rickson, the 19. 5" wheel supplier.

I have that TruSpeed from my (wrecked) 2000 truck. If this is what you need and are interested, send me a PM. You can also find them here:

By the way, the reason you didn't get many replies initially is that you posted this on the Off Roading forum. Next time, try one of the Product/Accessories forums.

Good luck,

Loren
