Just started looking for after market stereo for my 03 non infinity quad cab. Nothing fancy, just replace the door speakers, new amp, one sub, cd player. Two quotes I got were around $1500-$1700 for install and parts. Here are my questions:

-Are the front door stock speakers 6x9 or 6. 5?

-Would some replacement speakers not fit due to excessive depth(window)

-Would a 5 channel amp,4 plus one for the sub be better than a 4 channel amp and a one channel separate amp for the sub?

-Should I bother putting speakers in the dash locations, there aren't any in the holes right now?

-Did most of you guys order online and go to an installer for the work, or pay the extra $ to the installer for the equipment?

Thanks for the help

Just my opinion, I would consider Crutchfield, when you buy door speakers, it comes with all the mounting kit. When you buy a deck, it comes with the mounting kit and all the wire harness so you don't have to cut any wires. Detailed instructions are included. I had no problems installing all my stuff. Free shipping, no sales tax unless your in VA. My 02 came with 6X9s in the door, I put Kicker 6 1/2 with separate tweeters. Sounds way better than the original Infinity system did. crutchfield.com

The fronts are 6x9 and I replaced mine with Polks - not sure what model off hand. The rear doors are round - I think 5. 5 or 6 inch, but I replaced them with 6. 5 inchers and they fit fine.

The rears are 5. 25" dia.

I've replaced all my speakers with Rockford Fosgate's but the system still sounds muffled.

Someone posted that the chassis computer talks to (or equalizes) the radio and causes this muffled sound. I'm going to try to find out what wire going to the radio carries this info and cut it to see if things improve. Does anybody know what wire(s) it is?

the radio has a library of EQ curves for all Chrysler vehicles. When you turn the key on, the radio queries the body controller for the proper platform and curve numbers, then loads it into the DSP.

I don't know exactly which wire it is on the connector, but the data is carried over the J1850+ wire. But if you cut that, you also lose the steering wheel controls and the ability to control external CD changers and the satellite radio module. Also, the navigation radios will not work at all with J1850 disconnected.

That's weird that they are 6x9s up front since the hole is round. Are they still 6x9s with non-infinity?

I had some audiobahn 6x9's for the front door (would not fit)magnet hit the window, so I put focal 6 1/2 with seperate tweeters using a home made adapter plate. They rock much a$$

Thanks jzaremski, I don't have any of the things you mentioned so I'm gonna dive in. I thought maybe I'd start by getting an adapter patch cord for an after market radio and seeing which wires it uses. Then, I'll just disconnect any thing left and see what happens.

JL audio makes a nice stealth sub box that houses a 10 and fits completely under the rear seat.

I'd get a component set for the front - with separate woofer/midrange and tweeters with crossovers in each doors... then just replace the rear with coaxials...

You'd do better with a separate 1 or 2 channel amp for the sub and a separate amp for the highs but I guess a 5 channel could work ok. Make sure it has built in crossovers ...

I really like mB quart for component sets and JL subs. Jl makes nice speakers as well, as does polk audio.

JL makes great amps, so does Precision power, so does alpine. .
