I had the ring, pinion, crush sleeve, etc. replaced in my truck with 2200 miles on the clock. There was a bad whine in the rear end . Now have 1800 miles on the new rebuild and am hearing similar noise between 65-70MPH. Once I let off the pedal is mostly goes away... but it's pretty loud at 67-68MPH. Took it in Monday to have the diff fluid checked, Dealer said it was fine. . I want to get this issue resolved once and for all!!!! ( Why can't anything be done correctly the first time???) Since I am no mechanic, what should I tell the dealer to try and fix next? Should I just let them diagnose it again?? Or am I totally being a goof ball and maybe this is normal for the new axles and I am just not used to it ??? Hoping someone can give some advice for a fix! Thanks

Ask him to call STAR and check for availability of a mass damped drive line. They were available for the 4x2 in 03 and 04, but not sure about the 600's. They really eliminate the noise. Your shaft should have a part number on a tag attached to it. What PN do you have?

Going on a test drive with the service manager this afternoon. When i called he was aware of the dampened drive shaft. I don't care if the noise is normal, I just don't want to hear it! LOLOL

rear end noise

My 03 howled when it only had 5000mi at 65-70mph. I haul race car trailers from IN to MA . Took it to dealer and HOWLED at him!! He put in new rear end - complete- except tires and rims. No more howl - even after 125,000mi. So my advice is have that dealer put in the new rear end. It's the only way to make your truck right. The only reason these rear ends are howling is because they came through without sufficient oil from the factory and were not checked by the dealer. This is not a unique problem - we have been discussing this for over a year. Be firm.

I test drove an 03 SO 4x4 DRW that didn't whine. :)

I drove an 04 HO 4x4 DRW while I was waiting for my truck to come in. It had a lot of rear end noise. I thought "geeze, I hope my truck doesn't sound like this. " :(

Thank God my 04 doesn't have the rear end noise that some have reported. :)

My conclusion - Some do, some don't - IT IS NOT NORMAL.
