Wanted: B&W Turnball experiences

With my upgrades, I am running pretty hot. When empty, I can control temps. easily. But when towing my new 33' TT it is too easy to get temps. too high.

What would you suggest I do to lower temps. while towing?

Some say 'propane', others say, 'turbo'.

B. T. W. How hot is too hot? I can bury the gauge at 1600 deg no problem, but I was told that I could tow all day long at 1200.

It is turbo time. Propane is not the answer IMO. Call Piers and see what turbo he thinks you need.

I would tow all day a little warmer than 1200, but that is me.

Part of the problem is the stage III injectors. I run DDII's all day towing very heavy and have no problem. With the 3's in it runs too hot. That is with the HX40 from Piers. I realy like the setup I have now. 26,000 lbs and no heat issues.

Greg,

Did you ever try the DD2's with the stock HX35-W/12? I'm considering the DD2's with the thought of keeping my EGT's at 1300 degF or lower when towing - I'm currently running 1100 degF with the truck as equipped (see signature) at 21,180 GCW (21,500 GCWR).

Yep, I know that I'll have to give Peter @ South Bend a call before the injectors go in!

Edit: Oops - just read your signature. I guess you started out with the HY35-W/9, right?

RustyJC,

I did run the DDII's with the stock turbo. It was the HY 35 and it was fine with just the Van Aaken box and 2's. It would get a little hot but you don't need as much throttle pressure to pull the big hills. I am a firm believer that you need a complete upgrade package that includes eveything from exhaust to intake. With what you are going to pull it might end up with a new turbo too.

See my signature. I've pretty well addressed that with the Jardine 4" exhaust and the BHAF. By the way, there won't be any firewall-cutting intake systems - my wife and others have to ride in the truck while we're towing.

It may, indeed ... . that's what I'm trying to determine before I make the plunge for the DD2's and the clutch.

A HX40/16 will make a significant difference in EGTs. I did for me. I previously ran a PDR HX35/14... great turbo but did not lower the EGTs enough for my application in towing heavy on hills. I can still run hot and am thinking of changing to a milder injector.

Rusty,

What I mean is BHAF or AFE megacannon, HX 40, Injectors, Edge Box, 4" exhaust... ... ... ... . I do think the factory setup is ok for light to moderate work. If you start to bomb you will spiral downhill (EGT rise) until you complete the process. That is what I meant. I for one do not like the hole in the dash idea either. This thing screams already with the HX and the AFE... ...

Well, the Jacobs e-brake pretty much locks me into a 35-size turbo. That's why I'm trying to figure out if the BHAF and 4" exhaust working with the stock HX35-W/12 turbo and the EZ (with boost elbow) can keep the EGTs at 1300 degF or below if I go to DD2's. Right now, I'm running 1100 degF max when towing, so I've got room to add some fueling even with the stock turbo - I'm just not sure how much.

I cant say for sure if you will be ok. I remeber that if I pushed real hard I could hit 1250* to 1300* while towing. That is still in a range that you could back out of it and bring temps way down.

With the 4"and BHAF you will have alot more air. You can also find a used 14 housing for that stock turbo. JMHO. Hop this helps. If you want a mount for the BHAF, I have a used one I can send you for the shipping. Stainless Steel Mallory Mount.

Rusty, hopefully by next week and can give you some reports on how the EZ/DD2 combo runs in an ETH. I'm getting a set of DD2s and will be putting them in on Sunday at the BOMB session in Houston.

I'm looking for the same as you, how far I could push the BOMBs without needing a turbo upgrade (at least not right now).

JM

I have the EZ/DD2's combo on my ETH and temps are usually not a problem at all unless towing over the mountains then I have to back out a little. I do that 14cm exaust housing though which that may help a little better than stock.
