Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need transmission help/advice

I'm new to owning a diesel and new to TDR. Please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I just replaced the motor in my truck (cracked 53 block). Now the transmission is beginning to slip and it won't shift unless I let off the gas and give it some time then it will shift. My question is "Where can I take it to find out what it needs?" I live in Dayton, Ohio and don't trust the local dealerships. I'm not sure of taking it to a franchise transmission shop like AAMCO, or Brownies or IT. From reading the different posts on here I know the 1999 auto's have a bad history. What do you more experienced guys recommend? Thanks. Bob Hunter
