So, it all started with the Crew Cab. Well, maybe not. Maybe it was the 1990 that started this problem. Well, not really if I think about it... . the project was just sitting there not using its turbo... .

Lets start at the beginning. The crew cab motor is built as follows:

1997 CPL 2174 180 HP pump

DDP stage 2 injectors

181 Taper cut PDR delivery valves

3000 GSK

Head studs

Cometic head gasket (might not be enough anymore... . may need to o ring ;))

#10 plate

ATS exhaust manifold

Banks twin ram intake

PDR 2nd gen intercooler

60 PSI springs

HX35 (stock turbo) and HT3B 26 cm

Advanced timing (cant remember what I set it at... 17 deg sound right?? Hmmm)

Well, then last summer came. I was playing with the power in the 1990 too much and the EGTs started getting too high (273/650 @ wheels with stock H1C ;)). As I was heading accross country through the Rocky mountains at 20K lbs gross, I thought I turbo would be a wise option especially factoring in high altitude. So I "borrowed" the HX35 from the crew for a few weeks. Guess what? I like the HX35 on the DD. I like it on the daily alot and I dont want to give it back! ;):-laf

So, it looks like it is time to get a new small turbo for the compound setup as its not coming off the daily. :D I have all the options in the world. I was thinking maybe a PDR modified HX35 or S300, but maybe a ball bearing one would be nice... .

You see my motor specs and can see the amount of air I will need. I plan on doing towing, drag racing, and street driving with it.

What are your suggestions? What would you do in my shoes?

Robert

Drag race a four door dually 4x4 with an NV5600:eek: With the power and traction you will have, I think the first good 2nd gear launch will snap that Gear Venders right off the transfer case:{

Now if you are talking about a drag race up hill, loaded, with about a 65 mph roll, then yup your truck will shine:D

Sorry, can't help with the turbo tho:-laf

Nick

Nice Nick! :-laf Hear the vote of confidence from you!:D

OK, so maybe more hill racing than drag racing, but I still plan on trying it! ;)

Forgot to add the truck will also spend some time on the dyno... . Yes I know Nick. First good pull and the GV... ... :p

Robert

I say YOU STOLE IT FAIR AND SQUARE!!! :D

You could be nice and give it back, but why not stop there??? Just upgrade to an HX40 on the DD and let the other one keep "the little guy"??? Oo.

Borrowed. Stole. All depends on how you look at it! ;);)

Interesting idea on the HX40... . had not though about that... . :D

HX-40 with a 16cm housing provides decent power and low EGT's, but will require a switch to an HX-40 downpipe since the outlet is a true 4"

I let a friend of mine "borrow" my old one when I upgraded to a SPS 62 (aka... S-300 62mm) on my 92. Problem is that he fell in love with it and never gave it back! :-{} Later on, I let him try my 62 and he hated it for some reason.

I liked both of them the same, but the 40 screams!!! :D He later traded his 99 dually for an 07 mega and never put the stocker back on :mad: I lost the 40 forever!!! :{

Just plug 'Holset' into eBay and see what pops up. Sometimes a 40 will go for just a couple hundred when nobody notices what kind of jewel is up for bid and will sometimes go for several hundred when one is noticed!

Just make sure that it has a T-3 flange (only one that fits) because this turbo is designed for the larger 8. 3L and a 16cm housing is the best one for quick spooling and lower EGT and better flowing overall than stock HX-35 and is commonly used in PDR twins :D

Good luck and many miles to you!!!

Why is the Holset 40 good for daily driving?

Its common and cheaper I guess. My single HTT 62/14 is pretty slow around town but runs pretty cool pulling on the highway. Unloaded you have to throw some fuel for spool up, 5 psi at 750 to 800 egt on the interstate is what I see most of the time at 70 mph. 900 to 1100 towing my big 5th wheel at 20 to 25 pounds of boost on the hills.

Once I added the high flow DV's and 370's to my wimpy 160 pump the spool up is much quicker. 40 psi comes quick now. :D

I want a twin set up when I get the money though!

I have the BD twin turbos for towing. They have dropped my EGTS by over 300 degrees. I am going to drag race my truck as well as a daily driver. I have towed a 10,000 pound trailer but not with the twins. What I can tell you is that I can get into it now and not worry about EGTS getting in the 1300s like I used to. I rarely see 1,100 when I drive it like I stole it. I had a problem with blowing the boost boots but that has been fixed so it is off to the races and I am very confident that I will not have to worry about EGT temps. That was my biggest problem before the BD twins. They work nice together I jump up into the 50 pound range as soon as I stomp it and I can stay there. ARP head studs are holding the head down "hopefully". I can not say enough good things about the BD Towing twins.

Robert...

I would use either a HX40/16cm and pin the cover as to ensure longevity of the charger or a S300 variant in either a 62/65 or a 62/71 for the top charger. Either of the S300 variants would provide the little kick you want and it would depend on how hard you want it to hit as to which way to go(obviously the smaller 62/65 would light faster but would run out of energy quicker).

When I was helping JetPilot way back in the day with his "Slick Black Bottle Rocket" he had a set of Piers built twins with a HX40/16 up top and we made well over 700hp with them after Piers P-Pumped his truck with a Stoopid pump. Again, the HX40 had the cover pinned to ensure it would stay in place as in a set of twins at higher boost pressurs they ahd a tendency to blow the covers off due to the cover only being held in place with a snap ring.

Personally...

Twins are nice for towing, especially in high mountain passes to help keep the truck cool, but,I am a fan of big singles and love how hard they hit once they get lit. Anyone can make a set of twins make power on a 12v but its alot harder to tune a big single for power. However once you get a big single dialed in,whoo hooo hang on for the ride... ..... Andy

The HX-40's are too tempermental without extensive mods and the 16 housing is too big for good spool.

If you want a good project an HE351VE would kick but in a set of twins. :D

I would disagree with that statement.....

You do not need extensive mods to spool a HX40,you do need some more fueling though and timing.

There is really not much difference in the HX40/16 than the Modified HX35/16 your using. If you can spool that Modified 35/16 you can easily spool a HX40/16.
