I was doing the vacuum pump seal replacement - everything was going fine. I was pressing the seal retainer back into the adapter and did not see that part of the press frame was in contact with one of the flanges on the adapter - snapped it off.

If anyone has an adapter, or knows where I can get one (I'm assuming that the DC Parts is not going to have it), please email me or call me immediately!

On the road again...

Here is a pic of the broken adapter. The flange that broke is slightly longer than the undamaged one and that flange was on the back side where I couldn't see it while pressing the bushing back into the housing. Next time I will be more observant.

See the next post for the "fix".

I had no success locating a used part. One junk yard even did a national search that he said covered about 90% of all the junkyards in the US and couldn't find one. I still find that hard to believe. What - CTD Rams never get totaled? Or do the engines get snapped up as soon as they arrive at the junkyard? Who knows.

The local Cummins parts store said I would have to order the whole vacuum pump at a cost of $605.

So, I figured I had nothing to lose by trying to repair the damaged one. My wife's cousin is an expert welder at a local tool and die shop and he did a beautiful job of putting it back together for me. I guess my only concern now is that there is no misalignment that caused the seal to wear out prematurely or that the engine vibration does not cause it to crack again.

But, at least it is back together and drivable again (with Valvoline SynPower in the power steering pump).

Sorry to hear about the problem. Sounds like something I would do!:--)

Somewhere , on the internet in the past 2 or 3 days, I saw a vacuum pump for sell. I thought it was on E bay but I went back but couldn't find it again. I'll look again and If I spot it I'll let you know. This sort of thing (forgetting) happens frequently. Its called CRS and gets worse with increasing age!:(

Well, I spent over an hour doing searches and looking for where I saw that add. I can't find it anywhere! I'll keep looking.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Stan
