Ive got some oil leaking out of the valve cover gaskets. Can I get them at a Cummins shop or do I have to get them at the dealer? Will I need anything else also? If Cummins shop can get them. Does anyone know the the part number?
Thanks Jeff H.

Jeff, don't have a part number, but I suspect the gaskets would not be a problem at the dealer or Cummins. I've had good luck replacing the O-ring under the bolt head that holds the tappet cover in place. Just carry one of the old O-rings to Napa and buy replacements, they won't have a part number, but should have no problem matching up a replacement. They act as both a spacer and a seal and apply pressure to the gaskets. Always stopped any seepage for me.

Jeff,

If the o-rings are ok and everything is clean the gaskets should seal up ok. They are well made and can be used over. Cylinders 5 and 6 are kind of a PITA to get on just right so they take a bit of care to make sure that they are on correctly.

Joe,

I found my valve cover gaskets were getting a little "Soggy & Bloated" at about 80K miles.

I replaced them when I adjusted my valves.

HEMI®Dart,

That's very interesting. Some of my gaskets are original(I messed up a couple when I put the chrome kit on and had to reuse old ones). There is 142K+ on my truck and they all still look good. I've replaced the o-rings a few times because I've messed them up taking the valve covers off, but the base gaskets are ok. I take the covers off when I polish the chrome because it looks terrible if I do it with them on. Too much stuff in the way.

I replaced the gaskets on my '96 in April. The Cummins part number was 3902666
- about 22. 00 for the set of six from Cummins. Don't forget the previously mentioned o-rings as they don't come with the gaskets.

Another source for the Valve cover gaskets on the weekend is at your local Case implement dealer. The current skid steer loaders made by Case have a 4 cyl cummins engine. The gaskets for the 6P (6 something) engine are the same as the Dodge Cummins. $24 for the 6pack.
