Ok Folks...
Need some input. I'm looking for a set of nerf bars for my '99 Ram. Got a 4x4 and the wife is having trouble getting in/out (she's only 5' tall). I had a set of Smittybuilt bars on my previous truck ('96 GMC 4x4)and was happy with those. Only problem with them was the install... had to drill the frame below the doors to bolt on the bar flanges. Anyone had any experience with the new series that use the cab hangers/bushing points to mount these bars?
Any info appreciated. Momma's getting tired of playing trapeze artist.

TIA

Take a look at the Westin nerfs. You replace the cab mount bolts with their longer ones and bolt the hangers on. The bar slips onto the hangers and are bolted on also. The only drilling is a strut on each side to stiffen the bar so you only have to drill 4 small holes for self tapping screws. I gooped up the holes and screws with silicone to insure no rust or ways for fumes to get into the cab.

I think LUVERNE Stainless Steel Step bars are the best on the market. Similar to the Weston's but the tube is already pre-assembled to the metal box that mounts up to the same bolts in the frame that Weston uses. It is unnecessary to do any drilling. Instead of having to drill for a cheap bracket that Weston provides, LUVERNE has a set of threaded rods that mount into existing holes in the frame. Weston's bars are chrome plated and Luvern's are SS for the same money. You won't have to worry about rust and chrome chipping off in the future since your Ram will last so much longer than the rest of em. I'm using the Mopar extra long mud flaps on the front and rear and have had no rock chips.

Luverne's email is lte@luvernetruck.com

Do you have a phone # or website for Luverne? or maybe a picture of the threaded rods that they provide on your truck? I put a set of Grizzly SS nerf bars on mine and it had the same cheezy 2 straps that go up to the body as the Westins. So far I have just relied on the bolts going into the cab and check they fairly regularly. I am planning on setting up some sort of bracing to the frame but haven't had time yet. Maybe I could just buy the luverne ones or fabricate ones like them.

Ed,
I installed a new set of Smitty Builts last month.
They now go on easily with NO drilling. They fit nice and are solid.
I can't say much for their quality control as some brass is showing where "triple chrome" is suppose to be. My dealer has ordered a replacement and I am sure it will all work out OK.
Good Luck on whatever you choose,
Ron

I've got the Westins on my 3500 QC. I have owned 6 different vehicles with some type of running boards and I like these the best of any others I've used. Smittybilts are good, also.

Hey Ed,
I'd recmmend the new style Smittybilts. I installed them on my 99QC and I didn't want to drill any holes whatsoever. Thats why I chose these. My truck is a vary dark color so I bought the black ones, quality was top notch. Another reason I chose black is 'cause I like to off road and the chrome gets trashed way too easy.

I installed the chrome "grizzly" bars on my 98. 5. They're awsome. Lots of chrome and a plate step so you don't scratch the chrome. Need them so my betterhalf can climb aboard. They'll be on any truck I ever buy.

I've got the Westin Signatures and I like them. They're very solid and seem to be pretty durable. I did have some little difficulty installing them and had to do some simple modifications, but they are rock solid. I too filled those 4 holes with a sealer and haven't had a single problem with them.
