I thought it might be time for an update for those of you who are interested. You may remember that the utility company I work for bought a new Ford F350 4x4 six speed 6. 0 diesel in 2003 for my use here in Northern Nevada. I am the only person that drives this truck and it comes home with me every night. I now have put 128,000 miles on the truck. It has left me afoot twice due to alternator failure. I found that you have about 20 miles of driving on battery power alone following an alternator failure. The original alternator failed at about 70,000 miles. The rebuilt alternator from Car Quest failed at about 70,050 miles. Both times left me stranded and needing a tow truck. A new alternator was installed from Ford and is still cooking along.

Other than the above mentioned failures I figure I must have got a good 6. 0. It still does not nor will it ever have the power to pull toilet paper out of my *** below 2,000 r. p. m which is very noticeable with the six speed manual transmission. It does continue to have good power above 2,000 r. p. m and delivers what I consider good fuel mileage. (17. 5 mpg @ 75 mph,10500 lb truck with utility body). I have learned to use low for every start and low range for starting with a heavy load or up steep hills. Yes it is a p. i. t. a but I am still on the original clutch and don't expect to have to replace it for a good long time. I am very careful to change oil every 3,000 miles ( no consumption between changes) and fuel filters every 10,000 miles. In addition I have the lubricants in both axels, transfer case and transmission changed every 50,000 miles. I am also very careful to allow turbo cooldown time as this truck sees a lot of highway use. I have towed as much as 16,000 lbs for a cgvw of 26,500 lbs. Once you get the first 3 feet it does a good job. I am still on the original brake pads so you can tell I don't rawhide this truck. I treat it as well as my CTD. The truck itself is relatively rattle free despite a lot of dirt road and very severe off road work. It starts every time even down to -2 F,doesn't like it but it starts.

Would I ever trade my CTD for a Powerstroke? No freakin way. If Dodge didn't exist and I had to choose between a Ford Powerstroke with a 6 speed and a Chevy Duramax with a six speed for my use I would pick the Ford in a heartbeat. `At least you can still crawl under one without a jack, not so with the GM trucks. Sorry for the long post and I'd bet a lot of you could care less but there it is for what it's worth. Steve

Steve, thanks for the time to give us the up date. I am faced with the possibility of needing to buy a F450/550 to tow my trailer, as dodge continues to bee too slow to get a medium duty truck out there. I would thing with the 4. 30/4. 88 axle ratios the low speed torque might be tolerable, albeit at the cost of fuel economy. Any way thank's again.

Rick.

Its good to hear that it is treating you well. My best friend has a F350 crew cab with a 6. 0, 2004 model. Last month when my getrag started getting noisy, he called me from North Dakota, it had laid down on him with a blow EGR cooler. His dad went to get him with a 2000 7. 3 and my gooseneck. Got it back on the road, and day before yesterday my buddy calls from Montana, or Colorado, the 6. 0 blew a head gasket. His dad is on his way out with the Pete and equipment trailer this time. It has large exhaust, and a 70 hp "chip". It has been hooked to a trailer about 3 times, but I would say about 95% of the 14X,XXX miles on the truck have been with a bed full of toaters with tools in them. He does not treat it nicely, but It gets the same abuse my old cummins has gotten.

His truck has a Torque shift. I suppose it runs pretty good. My wife drove it one time across town. She said "You really have to lay into that truck to get it to move!!!" She's used to my First gen 5 speed that has lots of grunt down low. She says its the easiest manual she has ever driven. Even with 3. 55's and 33" tires, you can't kill it taking off in second gear.

I'd probably drive an old 77 power wagon with a 440 before owning a 6. 0. But I suppose if the cummins were never offered, we'd think a 6. 0 is pretty nice.

Good post!!

Thanks for the info. !!

I'm not brand loyal so it is nice to see unbiased reviews like this.

I know how you feel and I can honestly say that if it were not for the engine I would be driving something else.

So, no injector problems or oil leaks Huh?

Just an alternator?

Thats pretty damn good for those miles.

How is the steering and bearings holding up with those miles? Still tight?

AJ

The rebuilt alternator from Car Quest failed at about 70,050 miles. Both times left me stranded and needing a tow truck.

Ya shoulda gone to Victory Auto for your parts. Still ended up at Delongs?

Serria Pacific?

Good luck

Interesting. There are not very many 6. 0's out my way. Still a lot of guys driving 7. 3's.

I guess if you want a reliable 6. 0 you should leave it stock.

Nope no injector trouble or leaks. The steering has always been a little vague but hasn't gotten any worse.

You obviously know Winnemucca. Victory supply is a Car Quest dealer now. I had to get the factory alternator from Meridian Ford, Delong didn't have one. I work for Humboldt Telephone Company. We serve Northern Humboldt County and on up into Jordan Valley Oregon and a slice of Idaho.

Wow just goes to show you the (poor) quality of the 6. 0 when everyone is surprised that it made it a measly 128,000 miles without blowing up.

I'm not so sure that makes much of a difference. The company I work for bought a F-450 with a flat deck for hauling goose neck trailers from AK to various places in the lower 48 & back. I'm one of about three drivers that use it. I've logged over 17k with it and I hate the damn thing & I do like Fords. So far in 50k miles its dropped two injectors (seperate times, once on me). Smoked a turbo & has had to have the computer reflashed to get it running right once. Mind you that the those of us that drive this thing know how to treat a diesel & treat it as kind as we can since were running the AlCan alone.

Ours has the torque shift transmission. Not bad for an auto (I hate autos). But even with the auto there isn't ANY power under 2000rpms.

The truck itself is very well built. The engine is a POS.

Lots of coyotes! Just get anywhere near where there are cows you will see lots and lots of coyotes especially of course near dawn and dusk. Pm me and Ill give you some places near here to go. Steve
