Well I finally decided to take the next logical step with my '93 and install a performance pump. After looking and pricing I decided on "Wentland Diesel Service Inc" in Milton-Freewater OR. I contacted Lorin Wentland - owner manager a set a date of 5/14 for installation. Within 24 hrs. I decided on a new supply pump, a BD exhaust brake and a set of 60lb exhaust springs.
I drove up on 5/13 and spent the night in a local motel then went into their shop first thing Monday morning. I met Doug Rothrock the technician who would do the work. Doug started shortly after 8am and by noon had installed the new upgraded Bosch pump, supply pump, 60lb springs and checked the valve lash! Not a bad mornings work. Doug wanted to use the turbo mounted BD exhaust brake which forced him to fashion a new down pipe. Since the first gens use that double 90 degree down pipe I was hoping to go to 2 45s and get better exhaust flow. Doug used a down pipe from a 2nd gen truck. With a little - very little - help from me he built a very nice solution just the way I pictured it. We ran into a slight problem with the turbo "V" clamp which I have since solved.
Since I had "tweaked" my pump already and had a set of BD Power injectors I was expecting a moderate power increase - was I surprised. This pump was turned up 15% and it really hauls A$$!
As a side note the mileage on this trip was 24. 16 - all freeway at a speed of 65 to 70. I have yet to add a mod to this truck that has not improved both performanc and mileage.
My hats off to Lorin - Owner manager, Doug - Technician and Merlin (The Magician) who built and setup the pump. I highly recomend them to anyone who wants quality work done in a timley manner. I was able to spend the entire day with Doug and enjoyed his company and was impressed with his knowledge and capabilities. Go there - you wont be sorry.
I just returned from a 400 mile trip with my trailer and these mods made a real difference.
