Well, after wanting to improve the fuel system filtering to 2 micron and add better water separation I began my search. I knew that I didn't want a FASS or AirDog system because of a few reasons, cost of replacement filters and wanting to retain the stock filter and filter it in decreasing microns were the main reasons.

I started to look at filter kits that would allow me to add the filters now and add a pump later. The cost of most kits seamed a little out of line for what you actually get in them, a few fittings, hose and a bracket? I also looked and piecing it together myself but didn't want the hassle of making sure that I was getting the right parts. Getting the wrong part, to many of something, ect can quickly eat up any savings you may get.

I ended up calling Vulcan Diesel Performance and talking to Eric and he was interested in putting together a kit and asked if I could come to his shop and do a little R and D. I made the 2 and ½ hour drive on Saturday and we went to work on putting something together. First, let me say that working with Eric was great and he is very knowledgeable and knows what he is doing. I will be doing more businesses with him in the future! ( Raptor Pump and a draw straw V kit is next :drool2: )



This is the filter head that he uses, I liked the long threads on the center post, matches up real well with the Cat filter that I elected to use. Made me feel OK that the cat filter didn't come with a center post seal. On the other hand, the Fleetguard came with a seal and it's a good thing as it only has 3 threads to seal against the center post, the cat has very deep threads making lots of contact to seal well.

The filters I used, Cat 1R-0750 / Fleetguard FS1212 / Stock Fleetguard



With Eric's recommendation I went with the ½ in line. The fittings are the bottle neck and when you use ½ in it increase the flow though them. He machines out the ID to reduce the restriction, This picture does not do justice to the job he does on them.

This is the fitting that we used on the CP3, with the Jake pump sitting over the top of the CP3 space is tight. It screws into the pump then seals with a lock nut with a gasket on it after you get it pointing in the correct position. Should have better flow than a banjo bolt fitting.

Prototype Bracket. Eric will be getting them laser cut and polished for a more finished look. Eric had it all painted up nice until I got my grubby diesel covered hands on it and rubbed the paint off. I will update with the new production bracket when it becomes available.

When I get around to the new lift pump I will have ½ lines all the way from the tank to the CP3.



Eric is going to have options when he starts offering this kit like ½ or 3/8 lines, retain or bypass the stock filter, with or with out Jake Brake. Price point has not been set yet. Watch the Vulcan Web site for details to follow.

We CNC'ed an aluminum block to hold 2 filters, (1) a 10 Micron filter and (1) 2 Micron filter mounted on the frame rail... we forgot to service this on our 08 5500 truck and it ran just shy of 100K miles before they clogged and threw a code... boy were we red in the face... we checked our other trucks, including some CAT engines and all were good so we let them run.....

Over the years and mileage we've not gotten more than a teaspoon of water out of any of the trucks (6 running this system) at one time, checking them ever 2-3 months... we only use card locks where there is a filter on the pump going to the hose.....

I've posted photos of this several times...
 
I was looking at the Glacier Diesel 2 micron filter but with an APPS, it really limits where you can put it. I like where yours is mounted but I'm not sure it would work with an APPS either, any idea?
 
Looks good but seems like you should move the filters down to the frame so you are NOT heating the fuel as much! I moved mine away from the heat sources and if its cold out i then heat the fuel a little...
 
I am not a scientist or anything but i have been told that there is something called the effects of HOT fuel, i think it has to do with hard to start issues. I would also think that with the fuel heating that it could be more likely to have air trapped in it, and also the fuel is what COOLS and lubricates the injection pump. Might not be a big issue, if someone knows more about this please let us both know... I have tried to keep mine cool based on what people have recommended to me.
 
Well as promised here is the production bracket. The kit Includes: Donaldson 2 micron filter, high flow filter head, custom modified adapters to reduce flow restriction through the head, steel bracket, hardware and two 90 degree push lock fittings, one with fuel pressure access.

There are options for 3/8 and 1/2 and for fittings you might need for the CP3 and the tie in to the stock lines.

Here's the bracket and hardware to install it. Notice the long bolt has part of the head removed. It uses a tab on the stock intake horn and has the flat for clearance.

The angle on the bracket allows the filter to have a straight appearance when installed.
