Hello, I have spent the last year hauling my 5th wheel around the country. In January, I traded my 2006 2500 for a 2017 2500 4 X 4. I really like the 6 speed auto, the engine RPM's are way down there, (3.73 rear end)! Is there anything different that I should be looking at in the 2017? What about oil changes, do I need to do anything special to get access to the filter etc? Appreciate your comments!

Read my thread "EASY! 2013 up oil change"

You do not have a 3.73 you have 3.42 rear end as ALL RAM 2500/3500 SRW's do.

Buy only Fleetguard/MOPAR filters.

Sorry, I have been busy! So you say Chrysler's people lied to me about my rear end ratios? I double checked my build sheet, and it plainly states "3.73 axel ratio"! Why would Chrysler have several rear end ratio's available, and only provide one with no options to change? Does not make any sense to me! I will go with my original statement, I have a new 2017 2500 with Cummins engine and 3.73 rear end! Thank you for your response!

You need to look again. You would be correct if you had the GasPot.

"ALL" 2500/3500 SRW's with Cummins get the 3.42 rear end.

Do they still put the tag on the differential cover? I would look for that. Maybe what you are looking at is the standard equipment list with the gas engine. I'd look at the cover.

Did you see on Sam's window sticker how it lists the 3.42 ratio on the right hand side....even though the left shows 3.73? It lists it this way because 3.73 comes with the standard engine which is the Hemi. The Cummins is an option and it requires a 3.42 on a SRW 2500/3500.

Nobody is calling you a liar.

Yes I saw, and yes I know how to read the sticker! The original reply stating I did not have the equipment my sticker and build sheet stated was from some unknown source! Could have been in error or a mis print! I know what I have!

Wait, you admit it could be an error or a misprint but you "know what you have"? I guess you can continue to believe that you have 3.73's because that's what you want to believe, even though Ram does not offer that combination from the factory.

....and Ford owns Cummins.

You could always jack up the truck and turn the drive shaft around by hand, 3 and a half times, and see if the wheel has one rotation.......:-laf;) or if it takes 3 and three quarters of a turn.....

OK, what RPM are you running at 60 in 6th???

The pics above are the RAM PDF towing guide. I know you feel your are correct but it just an't so!

You should be turning about 1,300 @ 60.

That is exactly where I looked! It does not list the 3.42 under optional, but lists the 3.73 axel!

Ralph, I and serval others TDR members attended the roll out of the updated 6.7L Cummins engine with DEF usage back in June, 2013. This was held at the Columbus Mid-Engine Range plant in Columbus IN. The new updated 4th gen trucks were also displayed along with the redesign to the frame for increase towing capacity. Ram engineers and the Cummins engineers were on hand to discuss the new trucks and their features. In the Q&A one of the points made to us by the engineers from Ram was the new higher horsepower and torque of the 6.7L Cummins had enough HP/TQ to tow with in the SRW configuration with the 3.42 gear ratio. This would then be the only gear ratio that will be offered when the diesel engine option was ordered in the SRW configuration. I ask why was this the only ratio being offered and the reply was twofold, first simplicity of the assembly line less variables to effect assembly and storage when the SRW diesel trucks are being built. The other being that the SRW was tested to SAE J2807 and the truck passed the towing requirements in the SRW configuration with the 3.42 gear ratio. So, there is no need to offer anything else with the Cummins Diesel engine in the SRW configuration.

The following ratios would be offered only in the DRW configuration and they would be 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10 in the pick-up truck line. These trucks have a higher towing capacity than a SRW truck so that is why the different gear ratios are offered.

Sorry, but you have a 3.42 gear ratio in the truck unless there was a build error but that is highly unlikely.
