Been looking at differences between new 4500 and 3500 pickup bed. The torque on both engines are not far apart but the horses rating are quite a bit. Would towing heavy with either see much difference in HP rating?

Before you get too excited over towing your 5th wheel with a 4500 C&C, take a look at a comparison towing with a C&C and a pickup by a TDR member who has owned and towed heavy with both in TDR Issue 85, pages 102-103.

At peak torque on a pickup the engine is capable of 291hp and at peak torque on a C&C the engine is capable of 228hp. That is a 63 hp difference in the 1700-1800 rpm area.

I didn't think that the difference would be that much based on torque management but I think it is more noticeable than most think.

The C&C also has peak hp at 2400 rpms much lower than the 2800 for the pickup. That means that above 2400 rpms the C&C will be falling off while the pickup is still climbing, and that may make a bigger difference than the torque at mid range rpms.

At peak hp the C&C is making 710 lb/ft and at peak hp the pickup is making 722 lb/ft.

Based on those numbers if you do go 4500 get the 4.10's as the 4.44's and 4.88's are probably too low for highway cruising with a peak hp of 2400 rpms.

I haven't looked, but I think it might be wise to check Ram's GCWR ratings on a 4500 C&C vs. a 3500 DRW pickup with an Aisin transmission and a 4.10:1 axle ratio.

Check your State for your registration costs for a true commercial truck like a 4500 will be. In Comifornia I got screwed because in 07, the year I bought my C&C, Comifornia changed the law and made me declare my GCVW and advertise it on the door with a big number that your declaring. Also, even though its a grey area, I'm required to go through the scales, and if I'm over the door sticker i'll get fined.
