Well, I got that finished. Spent about 3 hours removing the stock system and installing a straight-piped 5" system from Big Exhaust. Searching through numerous old posts, I was well aware of pre fitting to see how bad UPS banged up the edges. My system came without any instructions, but as all guys know, we rarely read them anyway. I used the stainless steel band clamps ($5. 85 each). I have a Donaldson M090535 muffler to put on, but I thought I would run it about a week straight piped. Just at idle it's loud. Should be an interesting weekOo. :D :D

If you've read the threads you've seen what I have to say. I love mine and it sounds GREAT.

Do you get that ugly BRAAAP at 2150 or so with it straight?

Go find some retaining walls and tunnels and parking garages! :D

Oh yeah, there was a tunnel I went through today. WOW! Today was about 93 degrees, and I never put the windows up for the A/C. There is a considerable drone in a narrow band of 2125-2150 rpm (3. 54:1 rear ratio).

I had to shorten the exhaust by 16" to get it to fit. Is this common? Better to be to long than to short though. I wonder how many people think my truck is obnoxious now:p

I know your truck is obnoxious

A buddy lives out on a rural hill. He and another friend were out back having a beer one day and I drove up with the 5" straight.

They said, yep, we heard you coming 5 minutes ago. :D :p

The first time mine BRAAAPed at 2150, I looked back because I thought something had fallen off.

I had to shorten mine about that much. I had the same problem as Wade with the Braaaaaaap sound at about the same rpm. It was giving me a NASTY headache going down the interstate at 65mph. Below that or at 70+, no problem.

I would up putting on a small (approx. 9"dia. x 16"L) Dyna-flex straight-through resonator from Iowa80 truckstop. www.Iowa80.com It got rid of the racket at that speed, but didn't change the sound much, mostly turned the "volume" down a little. Just deepened it a little and can still hear the turbo quite nicely. :D Not a bad price either.

Dangit, don't tell me that. I was wondering about running just a resonator, but didn't have one handy. I'm running a 10x51 with the guts painstakingly removed. A 9x51 would fit better, I just grabbed the first thing. Whoops.

I'll try to get a photo up of my homeboy chrome 5" tip. I cut it from truck-shop scrap and had it butt-welded on.

I read about your surgical operation on your muffler, Dr. Patton. Let's see, what tools were involved? A torch, a hammer and what else were used? I'm really getting to like this straight-piped sound. With the windows up it's really not too bad, I'm surprised (except that 2125-2250rpm HUMMMMMMMMM). I have the 9X51 muffler in my garage, but have the feeling it may not get installed this weekend. I'm having lots of :D /gallon. I also think I'm getting better fuel mileage. I'll find out when I drive to Darlington Raceway Labor Day weekend. Maybe I'll see Jimmy Spencer be-yotch-slap someone else like he did Kurt Busch:{

Here is one of the threads I really found helpful. Gotta love the TDR!

Mine went up slightly. Between the exhaust and the Lucas fuel additive, it has come up almost 1mpg. Now I'm getting 16. 5mpg (w/ 4. 10's even).

A looong chisel, or at least something that was used like a chisel. The torch wouldn't reach far enough in to fully cut those pesky baffles.

Do it right, buy a muffler that you can drop a tennis ball through! :D

I just put my straight 5" from BigExhaust on last night took about an hour from start to finish. But I have no drone at all. The only time i get that buzz in the cab is from about 1400 to 1500 RPM. Other than that it was verry quite. With the windows rolled up and the radio OFF at 70 MPH I can not even here the exhaust. Maybe im just lucky. I might get a muffler to quite it down a bit cause I dont think the people next door liked the sound of it last night at 12am. :D

Drone is history

bmoeller

Just walked in from installing a Donaldson resonator on my 5" Straight BigExhaust, went for a quick test drive on the interstate and..... You were right the dreaded drone is gone, still sounds good but now I can drive on the interstate at 70-75mph and hold a conversation in the cab.

I ended up installing mine further back than you did - mine would not fit right behind my transfer case skid plate. Anyone wanting rid of the drone get one of these babies.

Thanks again bmoeller for the advise.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

I love straight-piped w/no muff. as much as the next guy, but the spliting headache I got on the interstate was to much.

Pretty weird though. I can drive a big truck with a stack on it all day with the windiows down (daycab too), and not have a problem. Only on the pickup. #ad

The resonator fit the bill nicely. :)

a 1 hour job? I must be slow. Did you have to cut any off to make it fit?

Sorry I had 2 other guys helping me I guess I should have pointed that Out first. Yeah I had to cut 9" off of it. But I think im going to take more off cause I dont think it looks right. It needs to be about 3 or 4 inches closer to the mud flap.

You can drop a grapefruit thru my 5" Donaldson muffler

AH!! My 5" system came today!! Yippeee!! I plan to put it in this weekend but it didnt come with instructions and I dont understand how the Downpipe on this mounts up to the HX35? Can someone clue me in here???? Help!

Jeff

If the 24v have a elbow bolted to the turbo like the 12v, the downpipe just bolts up the same as stock. Leave the bolts loose 'til everything else is installed so you can wiggle things a little if needed. Make sure to spray some PB Blaster or some other good penetrant on the threads a couple of times to assist in removing the downpipe from the turbo.
