I have some new still sealed Amsoil 15-40. Is it too old to use or would you guys be afraid of it? It was given to me so I would like to use it. Any help! Thanks.

It's Probably not up to current specs

I doubt its up to the current API CH-4/SH lube

classifaction for use in your Diesel engine.

If the label is still on it check to see if its rated API CH-4/SH. I doubt it though.

I agree with Hemi. I would think the oil is not formulated to current (read: required) specifications. If the bottles are unopened I wonder if Amsoil would replace them with the current formulation? A call to Amsoil may prove worthwhile.

The soot handling capabilities of this 15 year old oil are not going to be as good as a CH-4 rated product. I would use it in an old lawnmower or beater gas engine, but not the Cummins!

TooSlick

TwoSlick, that is what I initially thought however, I was also wondering if the superior nature of Amsoil's 15W-40 HDD&M all-synthetic might have been formulated to far surpass the minimum requirements of the day thereby possibly allowing its use in modern Diesel engines. If I remember correctly, they didn't have to change the original formulation of the Cummins Premium Blue until the CH rating... it was that good to begin with.

I for one wouldn't use it in my Cummins though.

Darn it:mad: It was free though!! Is there a chance that amsoil will replace it. It says on the label..... API SERVICE SF_CC_CD... . It is recommended in a Ford too. Should I just try to sell it to the other guys;) ;) Thanks for all the info and some more ,,,, B. J. Deal
