Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Time for a trans....

I just had an ATS manifold installed at BlueChip diesel and I noticed that my EGT's are up by 50 or so degrees. A new EGT probe had to be used since the old one could not be saved.

I figured it might be just a fluke, but over the last week, I have been hitting 800 on the highway empty when I have to accelerate from say 65 to 70 or 75, and this is with light acceleration.

I can hit 1300 degrees very easly when I step on it. I was not that easy before.

I did notice a little black "soot" around some of the gaskets on the new manifold, so I'm wondering if I need to re-tighten some of the bolts.

Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the ATS manifold bolts?

Should re-torquing be done on a cold manifold or a warm/hot manifold?

Could be your new probe is defective, or you don't have a good connection. Or it's possible the old one was tweaked and lying to you? Based on your mods 1300 should come fairly easily and 800 doesn't sound too high accelerating on the highway even going easy on it.

Was your old probe pre-turbo or post turbo? Where is the new probe?

Both probes have/are pre-turbo. I don't think the new probe is defective since the idle temps and driving around town temps are "normal" (i. e. in the 400 range).

I have had the AFE Proguard filter on for some months now (Stage 1), and it hasen't really lowered my EGT's compared to my old Amsoil filter in the OEM air box. (I wish I could cut a hole in the hood and stick the whole unit outside to get the coolest air possible).

I'll be pulling my backhoe this weekend, so I'll see how the temps are. I probably will have to move the #10 plate back to center from full forward if this keeps up.

Maybe I'm worring too much about the EGT's. I remember BlueChip's top machanic saying that the engines were made to handle 1300 and that you could drive it at 1250-1300 all day if necessary.

Torque on the ATS bolts should be 25 ft. /lbs. and I would check it cold.

As for EGTs, I would not run the engine for long periods of time at or over 1300*. Anything below 1250* is much safer for the pistons, IMHO. Your highway temps and idling temps seem normal, but I bet your old probe was lying to you a bit that is why your EGTs seem higher. Probe depth in the manifold also will create a big difference in temps as well.

The depth of the probe in the old manifold versus the new could also be causing the variations. Depending on if it is in the center of the manifold, versus towards one of the edges may cause a different reading.
