Co-worker has a little early to mid '80's TDI and he claims to average about 50 mpg with it, I would sure like to get one with prices what they are up to now.

I would test the glowplugs before you replace them. There is a relay that turns the glow plugs on, it could be the problem. I think its in the fuse box up under the dash. it might have a fuse on top of the relay.

Is it a ECO diesel with a turbo or the Normal Aspirated diesel?
At 144K is should be in good shape, unless someone over heated it bad, then it will burn engine oil.

Look for signs of coolant leaks around the head gasket.
Check the condition of the timing belt before you drive it very far, if it breaks you bend valves.
Check the rubber tubes between the injectors for leaks, its special hose (not vacuum line).
I get all my parts from Here
Stick with stock filters, no need for HP stuff, I mean its only 54hp :)

thanks for the advise. . no turbo, i will check the timing belt soon and the rubber tubes were leaking today... . do you know where i can get a service manual for it??thanks for the link

marcel

As for the service manual, Check Pepboys or a place that sells manuals. I had an aftermarket manual for my Rabbits, it had enough information to change timing belts, water pumps, etc.

I know there is A ton of information on the net about the old VW diesels, just got to look for it.

Turn it up to far, you will regret it. My thoughts are adding 2 HP ain't worth the lost MPG and extra smoke.

do you know where i can get a service manual for it??thanks for the link

Try ebay, there's thousands of manuals on there. You might get lucky and find a factory service manual on there for reasonable. They are so much better than a Chiltons it is unbelievable.

FOr a cheap beater, I'd leave it alone. 54hp isnt much less than the 4cyl gassers of the time (I think 65-80 was about the norm), plus you'll get better MPGs than any gasser.

The only thing I MIGHT do to it was to check the timing and maybe advance it a HAIR. If compression isnt too high (yeah, right), a turbo may add some umph to it.

Looks like you got a good buy.

i plan on leaving it stock for now... quite impressed with it as it is ,runs great . starts good ... i will definately get my money out of this one..... i have a 14 year old and this will make a great first car-no power and very reliable

I was looking at the picture again (wishing I still had mine).
I notice the rear rims are the same, but the front are both different then the rear for a total of 3 different style rims. Do they all have the same offset?
