Well it has been a couple of weeks since I bought a 01 mexican block from another member, took it over to a shop to have th motor built, found out it was honed out . 001 too big to be "standard" so they did a . 020 over bore kit with new pistons, rings, bearings... surfaced the top plate and built it up...

Now it is almost done with the swap... . told the mechanic to grind out the repair place on the side of my block to get a cross section of it and for a souvenier of my troubles...

But if all goes well, I should have my baby back by tuesday...

was hoping for this weekend but they have to take the head in to have the valves ground so everything will be taken care of. .

will post on how it runs later.

Eric

Erick - Good luck with the new "ticker". Bummer that you've been w/o truck - good chance to clean up the enging compartment at least. Send some snaps when finished.

How much for the rebuild? I have to have mine rebuilt and I would like to get an idea of what to expect.

Thanks,

Jeff

well mine was a rebuild and replace since the block wa cracked and I had to have them bore out the block I bought... but I do have some numbers you can expect... .

to R&R and engine with swapping parts, another place quoted 1600... .

I would imagine, if you just needed a rebuild,. . bore out, new pistons rings and bearings, and grind Valves... . It might be closevto what mine will be but I have already paid $1000 for the block plus this repair... . so figure about $2500 at least... I will get the beakdown of the costs when I get it...

Well I love it whe people know how to do their jobs...

Friday I call to see what is the prognosis for time and he says they just got the pistons in (. 020 over)... When he ordered the kit for the rebuild, he got . 040 over pistons so he had to return them and have cummins make them because they didn't have any on hand.....

Gee, do you think they could have told him that a week ago?... no that would be smart... . so friday they just got the pistons, all other machining is done, even reground the valves and adjusted them... . So just have to build and stuff new motor in... which on how often they get to it means like tuesday or wednesday. grrr. . paitience is wanning... . Had to borrow a buddies jeep to tow my ATV to a spot to try it out today (sun).

So can't wait to get it,... . Miss my baby... they even took the radiator to a shop to have it "sonically cleaned" to get out all the stop-leak I had it it for the crack and to just do it while it is out... ... . Super nice guys and they are busy working all kinds of trucks... dump trucks, you name it...

Hey Eric,

I've out of town for a month or more and haven't followed anything on TDR. Just curious why you didn't use the threadlock system you were contemplating when your original brock cracked.

More time??

Eric, hope it turns out "OK" for you. It will be nice to have you on the road again. Keep us informed of the progress. Did you get the new cam we sugguested?

Eric, going to have all the internals balanced up while you're at it? That's something I'm going to do for sure if I ever go through the engine on my '96. As good as Cummins stuff is it's still a mass-produced engine and there's room for improvement. When drawson did his the weight difference between the heaviest and lightest rods was 32 grams! I think builders shoot for 1-2 grams max.

I did do the lock-N-stitch... . it leaked... another member did the LS, ... it held... til he towed with it and got another crack 3" from the other repair... unless you do the whole side of the block from front to back, the weak spot is still there... . so that is why I got another block... this one happens to be a mexican block so that is good...

No I didn't get that other cam. . just used the one that came with the block... .

On the machining, I got the impresssion these guys were meticulous because they said the bore was . 001 oversize for "standard"... they also looked at all the con rods ad also polished the crank journals... Hot dipped the block to remove any rust, surfaced the top plate and got all done... then they took my head, ground the valves, replaced the valve guides and I imagine surfaced the head as well. They are also replacing the water pump, and the clutch... (shot) I had a pilot bearing go out and it started tearing up the fingers... no extra labor, just parts. . getting one like a SB con OFE... same type of material...

So save for the cam, crank, head, and block (used), will have a pretty new drivetrain... . guess I gotta break it in again... . back to dino oil... . gonna use Valvoline premium blue 15 W 40 for awhile...
