This information was kindly sent in by an alert reader.

The reason I'm writing you this e-mail is to make you aware, if you are not already, about the new attempt to take older cars off our nation's roadways. Unfortunately, this time it is actually happening, unless we as a collective force do something to stop it. The new legislation, which is at hand, allows cars to be pulled over and smog-checked at random on any public road or land regardless of the age of the vehicle, smog exempt status etc. Any car, any age, any status, whether it is smog exempt or is in fact legally certified at the time of registration... if it does not pass the roadside sniff, it is in line to be deemed a gross polluter, and we know what this means... THE CRUSHER! So you can see how your business, your patrons, your livelihood, and your hobby could be destroyed by such a law.

The failure of SB285 gives legislators the tool they need to take our classics away... legally, and we would have no recourse. Even though SB42 passed in January 1998, and exempted vehicles 25 years old and older from bi-annual smog checks, they too would be subject to roadside sniff tests. If they failed, we would lose them.

Please act now or this freedom will be lost along with so many others we have so willingly let them take from us by sheer inaction. For more info please e-mail me your fax number (hgraphics@oro.net) so that I can send you a petition form and explanation sheet, or write to Gary Ewing 8080 Townsend Dr. , Riverside, CA 92509.

Oh yeah that's right... . they already do.

I understand that there is legislation pending that will allow only a Dixie Cup of distilled water for flushing, one cup per person a week. :( ;) .

Not to fault this alert but this looks a lot like an email bouncing around the 'net about 1999 or 2000. Once these kinds of emails get going they are pretty tough to stop.

It looks a lot like this from Aug. 21, 1999. Not saying it's not valid or unimportant, just be aware it's nothing new. http://www.aeclassic.com/accc/

Get the straight facts. Lots of rumors have been floating for years regarding Calif smog laws. For diesels to date the opacity test can be run if there is lots of smoke, CHP can pull over smokers and test on the spot. For aftermarket performance upgrades make sure the products have a CARB number. Makes product 'legal' in Calif, you get a certification sticker for the drivers door jamb.

EX POST FACTO

Mr. JTW Cummins, the city you live in SAN jOSE CA , the San jose city police already have sniffer's and use them !they mount them on the highway ramp, as you pickup speed to enter the traffic! Just in case you did not know?:) GWD

They have been using sniffers for a couple of years in serveral areas of state. Go to the BAR page and find out they use for research only now. Will change when they get perfected for locating gross polluters.

Bay area was added to non attainment and is now subject to smog check II which brings more sniffers on line and tougher emissions testing.

I do driveability and emissions testing all the time and there are very few gross polluters on the road, but the few make it tough for everyone. You can be burning oil w/blue smoke and pass emissions test.

very few gross polluters

IF there are very FEW Gross Polluters, then why the sniffer,s ?? Is that how WE create more job's ? This is about as useless as

the CA Coastal commission!, yes I have a home on the CA coast

and the horror stories that come out of there are amazing!!But

their is hope! maybe the next big Quake will break off CA into the

water with me in it! GWD:D

There is absolutely nothing that the nit wits in the Peoples Republik can do any more that would surprise me. I find it very interesting that CA continues to move in a direction that is opposite of the rest of the country. And yes, I do inhabit the Peoples Republik.

I have been living in CA since 1960, I have seen it all, from all the influx of legal and illegal immigrants, out of staters moving in, homeless and bums from other states moving in because of higher wellfair money. This state is a magnet, there are too many people here and it will only get worse. As the CA producers move out of state to ecape this rat hole, there is just more poor uneducated non english speaking people to fill in and then some.

CA has the most laws, worst laws and politicians around. They all think everything is rosey when they run the state, but it has been going down hill since the 70's. But I do agree that the air is much cleaner, no more smog alerts and burning eyes and chest :) So what do the clean air police do, lets lower the air quality threshold to justify our jobs and smog checks and money. They keep lowering the threshold and running out factories that make things to clean the air some more. Now it is to the point if one owns more than one car and heven forbid it does not get 45 mpg your the bad guy, not them. Liberal laws and political correctness drive this state, too bad. Arnold only has a pipe dream to run this state. Only the people who have been voting for for these liberals could see there mistakes can change the course, but it wont happen because 70% of all CA people want what the poloticians give them. (GREED)!

Welcome to Mexifornia

All I can say is Turbo_Bob said it all, just like it really is! I think you

left out one big problem,The teachers union! the largest union in America and they have the politico's where they want them, they give the large amounts of campaign money(bribe's=greed) they and the green Thugs, and tree hugger's have shoved this PC C---down our throat's, I feel sorry for the young people that have to go trough the brain washing in school instead of the ABC's. AS for

Arnold he don't have a snow ball's chance in Hell with all the

Dry-rot in Sacratomato! Yes I voted for him also. Now you have to make an appointment to the DMV or stand in a line 50 people or

more long! make an appointment for smog check,Go to any County offices and get the run around,go back 3 or 4 times and ,payand pay,All the roads have gone to Hell Cal Trans is a joke! Thank heaven we bought in CO, and will move there as soon as the wife retire's. OH yes I was born in CA GWD
