Installed a new ported head and a PDR cam. Truck starts and runs fine in neutral but when I drove it around the block it world pour black smoke if I gave it some pedal and it won't get out of its own way.

The heads have been retorqued 4 times. I checked all of the boost lines for leaks. I was very carefull putting everything together. One other thing that has me baffled is that it is blowing smoke out the dipstick tube.

The timing was supposedly set at 19 degrees by the last shop that timed it. But I have found that the shop has been setting timing at like 22 degrees on stock motors to sell head gasket jobs. I have a friend that is bringing his timing tools over tomorrow to set it at 16. 5 since I now have head studs and fire rings I figure that would be a good number.

I was pretty confident it was right but I am doubting just about everything at this point. Would that cause my excessive blow by as well. I am trying to avoid pulling the front cover if I can. I can't get my boost gage to move at all. I pressurized the intake and it all seem to bleed straight thru the head.

Is there any way you could have the timing gears one tooth off TDC?

LVJunior - - Its been a while since I worked on an engine, but it is acting like the valves are open on the compression stroke. That would account for the white smoke and no boost from the turbo - - -I'm gonna' change my guess rather than one tooth off to maybe three of four teeth off. - - I don't think one tooth off would act that bad. You might see if compression holds at TDC when you get the equipment.

Good luck, and let us know what you find is the problem

ok here's the run down

Ok so a combination of check everything yourself and WTF is that part.

I ran the valves the first time by using the marks on the damper from the last shop that worked on it... . woops. I pined the pump and the mark was off by almost 45 degrees. I redid the valve adjustment and the truck starts beter smokes way less and the blow by was cut in half. I still have way more blow by than before the head and cam swap.

I found the boost problem but have no idea what the piece is (see photo). my stock head had no plugs in these holes so I didn't put plugs in the new head. Well I plugged the large bottom hole and the center hole on the side. It seemed to fix the boost issue.

Two questions. What is this part of the head for? Did I do the right thing by plugging those holes with pipe plugs? Should I plug the other two holes?

The other thing is the bottom end is HORRIBLE. I can count to 5 before the boost comes in. When it does it comes in slow for a second and then shoots to 42psi. This is way worse than before.

I am going to do timing tomorrow and try to adjust the AFC to get the bottom end back.

Thank you for all of the help.

MMeier,

The only person that has ever worked on my truck and made any improvements is Cord Reynolds. He is in Pahrump but drives into Vegas daily. He has been a HUGE help. As far as the other shops that have worked on it I would rather not trash them in a forum but if you PM me I will tell you about my experiences.

Here is the latest update.

I had my freind Cord come over and set the timming to 16. 5 degrees. We also turned the star wheel up and slid the AFC housing full forward. The bottom end is back and spool up is great. I definately need to tune some smoke out though. The truck is running great but still seams to have way to much blow by. I am going to run it for a day or so and see if it cleans up.
