Engine Swap into 80 model

Hello Everyone,

I just bought an 83 1 Ton Crew Cab 4x4 SB SRW and am in the process of shipping it home.

It is a 440/auto/NP205 Dana 60's front and rear with 4:10's and lockrites in both diffs also.

Now its time for me to start researhing the swap to the Cummins B5. 9.

I would probably like to keep the truck and auto but I want an overdrive unit. How strong are the 518's?

I would also like to use a 94 to 97 12 vavle engine with the inline pump.

Any suggestions? Any words of encouragement?

Thanks for any and all advice now Im off to search the archives... ...

Cool project. There is another fellow here, whose name I can't recall #ad
, that has a similar setup. If you want the raw power the 94 and up 12V is the way to go. I'm not too sure how the 518 will handle 1000ft-lbs #ad
LOL!!!

Good luck and keep us all posted!!!

I had an '80 crew cab 4x4 and I will assume the drivetrain stuff is the same, as I make some comments that hopefully will help you:
1. The front diff has 35 spline axles and big u-joints on the stub axles. Good.
2. The other u-joints are little and won't hold up. You will spend some $ on big companion flanges and modifying the driveshafts-best look at current trucks to see just how big they now are. The AT uses smaller diameter shafts, probably easier for you to find/buy the stuff you need.
3. Dodge modified the crossmember under the engine in '89 and put on a spacer plate for the gas engines. The Cummins didn't use it, so your crossmember may be too high for the stock mounts and brackets on the engine.
4. You probably already know you will need changes to the wiring for starting, grid heaters, etc.
5. You wll save some headaches if you find a wrecked first gen truck that had a diesel to pirate parts off it.
6. The rear diff may or may not be the 60HD. Probably not. The hd uses studs and nuts with coned washers at the hubs/ends of the axles (where the wheels are). HD also has ribbing on top of the cast center housing that makes it obvious to you once you have seen both. It was rated 6200 lb vs. 5500-5800 for the lesser ones. There was a 5800 lb one with the ribbing but bolts instead of studs to hold the axles. The rating should be under the hood or in the glove box on the equipment sticker, if still there. Most/all the rear axles are only 30 spline. Probably OK with an automatic, but just a bit iffy.

Member LARRYB has put a diesel in a 1972 Chinook motor home that had a 440 w/727. I know they are totally different but he may have some thoughts on what you may need for your project. Good luck and don't forget to take and show us pictures. GREAT Project. Enjoy.

Paul, Kool project!!! It is good to see someone from the south suburbs building a similar truck to myself. I live in Frankfort e-mail me if I can help in any way. I am currently swapping a early 91 cummins in a 1983 crewcab duallie. After much research I decided on a 47rh trans from a 96 cummins, the last year before the electronic 47re. (New replacements from chrysler come with all the latest upgrades in hard parts ie. clutchpacks, gears ect... )I ordered a new trans assy. from chrysler and sent the valve body to Bill Kondolay at DTT for mods and ordered one of his torque converters. I cut the mount ears off the K-frame of my donor truck, but I believe that I will not need them, looks like the original ones will work. I would reccomend going with the late 91 1/2 to 93 radiator as it is more efficent than the early models. I used the early 91 core support and modified it for the late radiator along with a banks intercooler for the early 91 truck.
I would also recommend the early 91 wiring as it does not use a computer only a module for the engine controls and a regular mopar voltage regulator for the alternator. My truck is 2wd so Im not sure abouth the crossmember on the 4wd. If you have any questions e-mail me. As for the inline pump motor search the 1st gen archives as there was a post about swapping a 215hp (inline pump) cummins in a first genner. Good luck, Murfman.

Paul, "crewcabdiesel", a TDR member, installed a diesel in a 1985 dually. From the sounds of things it is not a difficult swap. Good luck!

I've been driveing my crew cab diesel for bout two months now and I love it. it's so nice how Dodge makes everything match. the trucks didn't change much from 71' to 93. I used the wireing of a 92 and the ecm to power the overdrive and heaters but the voltage regulator in the ecm wasn't workin. I ended up hard wireing up the old extermal regulator, which is better anyway (I priced a new ecm at work $700 my cost, I don't think so) i cut off the 75 bulkhead connector and ordered up a 93 and pins and hooked everything up corasponding too the 75 under dash wireing. You will have it a little easier the dash is the same so take the instrment cluster from a 89 to 93 depening on the year of the motor and swap it out. i had to move the crossmeber back by a set of bolt holes cuz of the O/D ( drilled 4 new ones and uesd 8 of the old ones) I hope this helps e mail me i you need more. I'm also thinkin of putting a cummins with the new 6 speed in my 67 crew cab power wagon. have fun

1975 crew cab power wagon had a 440 now has a 93 cummins atuo trans. 6" lift 33" swampers pw seats pw locks. pulls a 30' gooseneck trailer. lots of fun.

The advice about using a early 91 wiring is a good one. They still use a old fashion voltage regulator and not a computer. I lucked out when I bought my donor truck, I didn't know the differences. Good luck on your conversion, if you need any suggestions let me know

1985 DODGE 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4 in 1999. Converted to a non-intercooled 1991 Cummins Turbo diesel & 5 speed Getrag in 2000(wife can't drive a stick :). Freshly rebuilt and balanced Cummins. Rebuilt Injector pump and tweaked. 4:10 gears, limited slip rear end, 205 transfer case, 16" Goodyear GSA Wranglers and LE Package and a Sony CD Stereo. Next add-on some “Banks” toys ! Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton. Last year for the Crew Cab was 1985. If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy. CrewCabDiesel,

I moved my reply over to the Cummins Conversion topic from the crew cab making cab noise topic.

Could you post the parts and the part numbers with the prices. It will help me and anyone that searches through the archives as well.

What does a used diesel NP205 usually cost?
How much would a rebuild kit cost and what is the time and cash savings to just buying one outright vs. converting a gas NP205 to the diesel specs?

Thanks

Get out your measuring stick... that 67 has the same room my 65 does... and it's several inches too short from the firewall to radiator to put in a 6B. Unless you want to start cutting out the firewall, yer gonna have to go with a 4B or something.

I'm considering that kind of swap myself, which is why I know this.

Good luck on your project. Just pulled a 360/torqflite out of an '84 Ramcharger and slipped a Cummins/torqflite/NP205 into its place. The only things I found I had to do were; different core support for clearance due to engine length and stretching of two holes on rear trans support mount, also diesel app. wiring harnesses. Otherwise its pretty much a bolt in operation. Dodge seems to be good about making everything fit a standard chassis, not the other way around.
Think you'll have good wrenching and a neat rig when you're done.
