Interesting!

Does this mean we may start seeing a bunch of SUV drivers on the TDR? That's OK. I think that most Cummins owners would not mind having a Hummer, If we had the money to waste. Maybe the Rescue will be more affordable!

I hope jeep can compete with Hummer!!

That wasn't the end of the discussion!!!!

They further said that 6. 1 liter is also going to be in the new Dodge Trucks!!!!

Interesting news!!!!

Based on this it looks like the displacement has gone up a little, who know what else has changed. It says "all new"... I just hope that it's still an I-6, not a V-8.....

I feel dumb - your right 6. 1 is larger displacement. I am not sure what the ratio is, but I think there is a set amount of possible HP for every cubic unit, for each engine. Thus, just the . 2 displacement might be the only "major"change. Usually such change comes with an effeciency change too - maybe less MPG. The government won't like that!

Didn't we have this same argument years back with the Power Wagon concept? Everyone debated about whether we would go to the 7. 2 liter Cat that was used in the concept, and 4 years later, we still have the same 359-inch Cummins.

The Jeep Rescue is a concept. it would be nothing for Cummins or any other engine manufacturer to make a one-off for a concept vehicle. Cummins likely would not want to go through the expense of designing and EPA-certifying another engine just for a single application when they just went through all the testing and approval for the existing 5. 9L ISBe. If Cummins indeed is changing displacement, they would have made a 6. 1L ISB already for use in Europe and or the RV/medium truck markets where the product can be put to the streets quicker. It would be expensive to go through all the trouble of building the common-rail 5. 9 for just a year anad a half, then going to a completely new engine for no reason at all - the existing engine can be rated at 325/600 with no change in displacement - BOMBed engines already exceed that.

Just a thought, if they are not going to make the 5. 9 any more, will we still get after market support. Theres not to many 03's or 4's on the road.

I wouldn't bet on the proven 5. 9L being replaced by the 6. 1L. I think we will see the 5. 9L with the emission modifications that we have all been expecting for the 2004. 5 trucks. I think the unanswered question is what will the modifications consist of?

Len

No displacement changes.

My bet is there will be no displacement changes to the 3rd gen trucks for quite some time. Too much invested in the 5. 9 engine to get it where it is now (EPA) and I am satisfied that Cummins can turn up the power without major changes (structure / foundation is sound). Oo.

I would not be in the market for the new engine without it first being proven.

I agree with all. The article makes clear statements that it is a concepts car, but also clearly states that the engine is all new. Has Cummins and DC been working on this with no indications until now? Pretty bold statements in the article.

Hot Dawg!, I get to buy another Truck!Oo.

Carlton, Change your login name and give us the skinny, we won't tell, honest:D

The article may have have referred to a new 6. 1 liter Cummins which is cool, but I think the author has his signals crossed when it comes to actual production. For 2005 the new 6. 1 Hemi will be available and the author may have somehow confused the "concept 6. 1 Cummins" with the "genuine 6. 1 Hemi".

6.1 Cummins

It wouldn't be the first time the news media got their facts wrong and got everyone excited.

However... . those horsepower/torque figures don't look right for a gasser... looks more diesel to me.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I bet Rosco is right. How many journalists pay as much attention to detail as the people on this board? How can they with all of the things they have to find out and write about every day? Completely new may mean completely new to this market, but tried and true overseas. Guess we'll find out for real soon enough, but who doesn't like to dream about more torque, Hp, VGT, etc. ? I know I do, and there's always the possibility of the self fulfilling prophesy down the road...

Cummins changes

FWIW, I got this reply from Cummins today in response to my question on whether ALL trucks built after 1/1/04 would have EGR systems:

"Sorry Danny, we can't give you the information ... . it's Dodge product plan and release info and they will be the ones to tell you. The announcement date for the new Ram trucks is fairly soon; all we can say is, "you will not be disappointed. "

The Dodge response is: "We cannot discuss future model year truck models, as to how they will be equipped and spec'd. " Therefore, when Daimler-Chrysler defines their product plans for future product and makes them public, we then can share that information our mutual customers.

It's likely that, once the specific product details are available, you will be able to select either at 2004 or 2004. 5, but it you want to order a truck you will have to decide soon we understand. Perhaps your Dodge dealer can offer more insight. It is their truck and we are the engine supplier only. "

Anybody know when this magical date is??

I ordered my rig on 10/10. Charley said it would be six weeks which would have been up this Friday. So, I called to get the skinny. According to Charley my truck has only made it to D1. javascript:smilie(':{')

Cry

He said he had to call a number of other folks who had placed orders with the news their orders were going to be delayed. Apparently because they are getting the new engine. "But they are going to have more horsepower and torque. " Most likely to rechurn all the exhaust gases. Oh, joy!

I asked if my rig would be pre-EGR or if I should cancel the order and shop for a rig on a lot now. Charley said my rig would be pre-EGR - Thank you Jesus!!

big grin:

All I have to do is be patient for three more weeks, if I'm lucky. Miss'n my 2002 6 speed HO 4x4.

No, No, No, the press is never, ever wrong:rolleyes:

Well,

I sure hope the article is wrong. If I was to guess, I would say that the '04. 5 engine will still be a 5. 9 and the specs will be upped to 325/600. I also think all engines built after January will be EGR equipped. Personally, 20 hp and 45 ft lbs isn't enough for me to deal with the EGR issue. This is one of the reasons I rushed out and bought my '03.

Time will tell whether or not I made the right move. All I know right now, is I love my new truck. :D
